So there can be something worse than Windows 11...

Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OS

Reports suggest that Microsoft may be gearing up to launch Windows 12 this year, which will be a modular and AI-focused OS.

@jonsnow here i sit and have no clue since 20 years why people still use this shit

@m3tti @jonsnow because nobody ever got fired for choosing Windows.

…yet.

@jonsnow I'm so happy of having jumped ship and switching to Linux Mint

@jonsnow how to destroy a product in two steps:

Step one -> Do what Microslop is doing
Step two -> Repeat step one

@jonsnow Oh No! This will break the good-bad-good versioning of Windows
@3dpng @jonsnow So many reasons to call it Windows 13 instead.
@liebach @3dpng Windows Copilot One X 360 Professional
@jonsnow @3dpng Perfect. Then, just before releasing that, they could release a good Windows 12, same as Windows 11 without all the co-pilot and microsoft account crap etc., a really barebones windows version, for those that just want an operating system (99% of users). I think I might even use something like that.

@3dpng @jonsnow That pattern ended nearly 20 years ago, when Windows 7 was their last good release. The pattern starting with XP has been good-bad-good-humiliating-bad-wtaf and now here we are looking at adding "omfg" to the list.

I'm fortunate enough to have a lifetime of skills that enabled me to jump into a lifeboat and sail far from this unholy, sloppy, Orwellian mess.

@jonsnow

Looks like my experiments with Linux will be permanent then 🙂

@post_reader Sorry that I say it: Unfortunately, it's too much tech language for ordinary people.

It can help to write texts in cooperation with absolutely non-techie people who are experienced in education. If school kids understand a text, unexperienced adults will, too.

Someone had to tell it;
I think I covered the basic problems in more accessible style.
Gems for linux community are of course included.
@jonsnow "transparent glass elements" - was it Vista with "Aero" UI elements? Failed once, let's repeat the mistake again 🙃
@jonsnow The year of Linux, and this time it might be for real.
@jonsnow so is this GOP windows because of the red colour?

@jonsnow I'm sticking with 10 until Steam bricks, then I will be forced to figure out how to get my Linux to connect to the interwebz (it used to fine, then at some point, it was like, nope, no interwebz for you!).

Most of the software I use is like 20 years old+ anyway. I was still using Win7 up until about 3 years ago when I got donated my cousin's PC. My plan was Windoze for games and Linux for everything else, but I couldn't get any of my main programs to work on Play on Linux so I had to resign myself to Windows being my main and I use Mint's ssd for backups.

@SilverArrows @jonsnow Same here, more or less--I use Linux on my daily driver (an ancient desktop), but audio software on Linux isn't quite up to snuff yet.

I had to edit the registry in Windows 10 to stop it from downloading the Windows 11 update. Windows 10 isn't great, but it isn't using all my system resources to generate data and train AI so Microsoft can increase their stock values with my processor and RAM.

Goddamn I hate Microsoft.

@clonedhuman luckily my PC is "not compatible" with 11. But I did have to keeping telling win7 on my crappy old netbook to not install win10 with every update. It could barely handle 7.

@clonedhuman

Same here, and to disable all things Copilot.
Some HAVE TO use Windows. It's not like they have the choice if their work depends on it.

Depending on Ai,
expensive new hardware,
subscription-based OS (it will come for full OS, I don't doubt it),
depending on hardware that is hogged by developers so we pay through our noses:
This all creates an elite of those who can afford it, and an interesting alternative stream of pitchforks is in the making as well.

@SilverArrows @jonsnow

@pascaline oh yes they brought in copilot in a Win10 update last year and I'm like, No you don't!
@jonsnow Anyone remember when they said Windows 10 would be the last version? Am I making that up?
@barryallen2023 @jonsnow Maybe they meant the last usable Windows version (yes they did say that) 😵‍💫

@jonsnow

Windows 12 reportedly set for release this year as a subscription-based, AI-focused OS

Looking at what Satja AI Slop lover Nadella wants to inflict on windows victims

linux userbase should grow more.

@jonsnow To make it worse, they most likely will name it Windows Copilot OS or WiCOS.
@jonsnow windows advanced next-generation copilot operating system. wanc os
@aqunt @jonsnow an OS for wancers 😹
@jonsnow time to switch to os/2 warp
@jonsnow Windows? did you mean Wincopilot?
@jonsnow Well as someone who hasn’t used Windows seriously since the demise of Win 7, all I can say is ..So what?

@jonsnow

Quick question though, in the article they mention **some** features of the OS will be behind a subscription, wouldn't that mean that you would still be able to use essential features?

Either way, the fact existing computers that were designed to run Windows 11 are not going to be compatible with Windows 12 because of the NPU requirement bullshit already makes me glad I switched to Linux, it's like Microsoft knows. Being able to upgrade your operating system without having to buy an entirely new computer is a thing of the past it seems. :/

@jonsnow

P.S: Even if you would still be able to use essential features, it does set a precedent for subscription-based OS where you don't own a copy of the OS, that's not really the future of computing we want to be headed to.

@NovemDecimal based on the information we have (which is unofficial leaks from insiders) it seems like the core of Windows will be a one-time purchase and some "advanced AI features" will be behind a subscription. This could mean better models, different functionalities, anything really. Leave it to Microslop, a.k.a. the Masters of Enshittification, to try to squeeze as much of extra cash as possible through aggressive nagging and dark patterns from customers who already paid for their OS.
@NovemDecimal the leaks also claim it's modular but you can bet you won't be able to disable Copilot and many other things Microslop want you to use, buy etc.

@jonsnow @NovemDecimal At least, having some ai slop paywalled makes it clear that it's not a unavoidable default....

I'm still never going to touch that stuff again. ;)

@jonsnow move to Linux now you still can.

Linux is already forbidden now in California

@melroy how do they plan to enforce that?
@lucasth @melroy By preventing the sale of computers with pre-installed Linux.

@StumpyTheMutt @melroy

Let's hope no one follows them.... That's stupidity.

@jonsnow After the Windows 11 flop, you'd have thought they would learn their lesson. Obviously not.
@jonsnow Couldn't even run that slop if I wanted to since my computer had a major CPU and motherboard upgrade in 2021 and it doesn't have an NPU.

@[email protected] I don't have a dog in this race (longtime Linux user, and I've given up being a tech journo) but this report felt off to me. WindowsCentral did a bit of extra source chasing and reckons it's overblown to say the least https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/no-an-ai-focused-windows-12-is-not-coming-this-year-false-report-gets-the-facts-completely-wrong

@jonsnow is that referring to crappy software or crappy relationships?!
@jonsnow probably waiting till 2027 to see if California bans linux or not.
@jonsnow I remember when Windoze 10 was going to be the last version ever...

@jonsnow

I'm starting to think there's so hardcore FOSS nerd undercover at Microsoft, who's going to singlehandledly bring forth the Year of Linux on the Desktop.

@jonsnow @briankrebs Apple are going to sell so many MacBook Neos.
@jonsnow Didn't California just pass a law to take effect in Jan 2027 that makes it mandatory gor the OS itself to verify the user's age? It really plays into this OS as a subscription game microslop is playing.
@jonsnow All about money! Greed of big Tech, not only at microsoft.
@jonsnow What amaze me is that when you think M$ did reach the bottom, it surprise you digging more !
That is another reason to avoid that crap, Linux user since 1998

@jonsnow

May I bring you attention to these? I came across articles that rumors about Windows 12 releasing this year are exaggerated and false.

https://sunny.garden/@NovemDecimal/116171663426497984

@NovemDecimal Interesting. So far we had romoured claims, rumoured disclaimers and nothing official from Microslop.

The release date is the least of the concerns and the rest just sounds like something Microslop would (and still might) do.

The 2nd article is from 2023 and only says that Windows "will not need subscription to *use* it". Nothing about "subscriptions for extra features" 🙂

Let's wait and see. Makes really no difference to me as I made a vow to never install Windows again 🐧
