Trying out the fediverse for the first time today. I've been reading a lot about it, now it's time to figure out how it works and build an internet home here.

My goal is to figure out how I can bring https://gobikecamping.com/ into the fediverse and help people who love bike touring own their data and escape the metaverse.

GoBikeCamping - Find Bike-Friendly Campsites and Resources

Discover bike-friendly campsites, bike shops, and resources for your next cycling adventure.

@spencexyz what is the platform behind the website? I can help with guidance.

@theraccoonbytes I would love any advice you have. The website is just a NextJS app that I've built. I'm starting to build a blogging platform around the map on the website.

I don't fully understand yet how I'd then get that on the fediverse. Do I fork an existing platform and build on that so that when you open one of these posts on my serve you can see all of the enhanced features, like mapping and gpx downloads?

I don't think I fully grasp how this is all wired up yet.

@spencexyz I created an article, well a series of posts, you may want to take a look.

It is one @blog but this is the direct link:

A guide to implement ActivityPub in a static site (or any website)

Hi! I have created this index for easy navigation. In Part 1, we will discuss why it is important to bring your site to the Fediverse. In Part 2, we will delve into an overview of the design of my implementation. In Part 3, we will make your blog discovereable in the fediverse. In Part 4, we will generate our notes and outbox, which contains posts ready to be shared in the Fediverse. Part 5, is an interlude to implement a subscribing to your site feature with fediverse accounts.

@spencexyz Have you found the #BikeTooter and #BikeNite folks yet? I think a lot of people are very tired of Meta right now.

Welcome here!

@StaceyCornelius I hadn't seen these! thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
@spencexyz @StaceyCornelius Hashtags is how you find your people here! You can follow the tags like or instead of following people.

@spencexyz @StaceyCornelius #bikenite runs every Friday from 7-8pm (eastern time) though a lot of the folks are based in CA (4-5pm their time)

@ascentale hosts, and gives 8 prompts each week that you can respond to in real time, or any time at your convenience

Sometimes it gets super-geeky, and sometimes it’s light-hearted, but your content would be very welcome!

@spencexyz Welcome! There’s a pretty huge #biking contingent here (not me, embarrassingly) β€” you should easily find your peeps!

@spencexyz Hi Spencer πŸ‘‹πŸ˜Š

Welcome!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, Fedinaughts are a most excellent bunch of people & will help directly or point you to someone who can.

@FediTips is an excellent starter for 10.

Have a most excellent weekend! 😊🫢 πŸΏοΈπŸ––

β€œOwn their data” sounds interestingly nerdy - all the way down to the hardware on their bikes, or on a server they own ?cooperatively?, or what?

(Eta, oh, I see at least one hosting expert has already answered! Good stuff.)

@spencexyz

@clew right now it refers to content you put online, like photos and posts you make about your long distance bicycle adventures.

long term, I'd love to see a federated version of Strava. every year they cut down their api access further and further. but it's our data and we should be able to share with any external apps we want.

I'm trying to figure out how I can use the tools I'm building to expose more cyclists to the fediverse and help fuel that demand.

@spencexyz @clew it seems, there is a federated thing to be the successor of komoot and strava allready in the making. Maybe you can/like/want to contribute to that project?

@Reinald @clew I've seen some open source strava clones. Is there a federated one that people are starting to use? I'd love to contribute.

Is there a website that shows federated projects that people are building?

There's a few. I'll leave other maintainers to pitch their own, but I'm involved with;

https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/

... which is based on data gathering on this watchlist;

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/ActivityPub-server-watchlist

FYI they both need some major updates, but I was recently shouldertapped to take over as Lead Goose, and we're working on it!

Let's make social media free, federated and fun! Fediverse.Party is your guide into the world of decentralized, autonomous networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. No ads and no algorithms. Join Fediverse and become part of the new interconnected Web!

Just added wanderer.to to that AP watchlist, and I'll add your project to our 'considering federation' watchlist for now;

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/considering-federation-watchlist

Just so I can find you and this thread again. But as soon as you commit to implementing ActivityPub, please let me know, and I'll move gobikecamping.com to the main watchlist.

FYI This old wiki page is also heavily out-of-date and may be due for retirement. We're still deciding.

@mensrea @clew this is interesting! can you tell me more about how this works? are you one of the maintainers?
@spencexyz @clew no and no. I came across it the other day and it was still in my tabs. the dev is here though
@spencexyz I suspect you’ve already found him, but if not it looks like @javahippie is the awesomeness behind FitPub.
@kaleb @javahippie hey Tim, I'd love to check out your project. I tried to sign up but I need a registration password. Would you be able to DM me one?

hey @Bonfire ! i saw this thread and thought you might be interested. there are currently solutions like OpenTracks for tracking physical activity statistics, but none have direct integration with ActivityPub for social sharing. A bonfire extension to integrate with an existing activity tracker could help many cyclists, hikers, runners, and more activity clubs migrate from Strava to communities on the fediverse

@Bonfire @memoria @clew sorry, I'm new to all of this. What do the bonfire extensions do? How do they work? I was just on the website but I'm still a little unclear how they work.

Hey @haraldkliems, you’ve had a lot of experience with Strava and the various alternatives, right? Any thoughts on what would make an open – and possibly federated – alternative viable?

@spencexyz

@kaleb @haraldkliems do you have any recs for good alternatives?
@spencexyz @kaleb I think other people have pointed you to wanderer.to already. But I think a lot of the campground info would be much more useful in @openstreetmap. But maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do with your platform.

@haraldkliems @kaleb @openstreetmap the platform started out just POIs on a map. I found it hard to use open street maps to view the data I wanted about the campgrounds. In the future, I'd like to have the platform sync with OSM so people can see the data in other places.

right now I'm exploring other functionality for the site similar to things that https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/ has. But modernized with new functionality that I would like to have.

Did you see the other post in the thread about wanderer.to? It seems to be exactly that, and designed with ActivityPub so it can federated with allied services.

I am interested in bike camping. I followed you.

Hi Spencer, welcome πŸ‘‹

If you want an easy-to-understand guide to how this place works, have a look at the website https://fedi.tips (especially the section marked "Quick Start").

Please feel free to ask if you want help with anything specific, I am trying to provide unofficial tech support on here πŸ™‚

Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@spencexyz good goal! Is it just US or are you in EU too?

@NotYours there isn't any data right now for the EU, just because no one has added any.

I've been focused on US and Canada right now since that's what I know and have experience with. I hope to expand to the EU as I run out of data to add in the US and start seeking out stuff for the EU.

@spencexyz good luck! Cool project!
@spencexyz Tip one: edit your post and make that url clickable, I believe you need https: and two slashes, like: https://www.gobikecamping.com
@spencexyz bicycles and data go with the fediverse the same way that cheese and crackers go with port, or music goes with dancing. They were made for each other.
@http_error_418 thanks for the tip, I fixed it! it really is great being on a platform that lets you do the little things, like edit.

@spencexyz

Welcome! There are lots of very interesting people here. You are responsible for finding your folks.

What I do is when someone posts something interesting, I tap on their avatar image left of their screen name at the top of their post and look at their profile page. If they seem like interesting people, I follow them. If someone turns out to be not who you thought, you can unfollow them later. Follow lots of people starting out.

@spencexyz welcome! Loads of cyclists on here. You will be assured of a great welcome!
