Trying out the fediverse for the first time today. I've been reading a lot about it, now it's time to figure out how it works and build an internet home here.

My goal is to figure out how I can bring https://gobikecamping.com/ into the fediverse and help people who love bike touring own their data and escape the metaverse.

“Own their data” sounds interestingly nerdy - all the way down to the hardware on their bikes, or on a server they own ?cooperatively?, or what?

(Eta, oh, I see at least one hosting expert has already answered! Good stuff.)

@spencexyz

@clew right now it refers to content you put online, like photos and posts you make about your long distance bicycle adventures.

long term, I'd love to see a federated version of Strava. every year they cut down their api access further and further. but it's our data and we should be able to share with any external apps we want.

I'm trying to figure out how I can use the tools I'm building to expose more cyclists to the fediverse and help fuel that demand.

@spencexyz @clew it seems, there is a federated thing to be the successor of komoot and strava allready in the making. Maybe you can/like/want to contribute to that project?

@Reinald @clew I've seen some open source strava clones. Is there a federated one that people are starting to use? I'd love to contribute.

Is there a website that shows federated projects that people are building?

@Reinald @clew thanks, I'll take a look at this! similar name to another app that I love: https://wandrer.earth/

There's a few. I'll leave other maintainers to pitch their own, but I'm involved with;

https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/

... which is based on data gathering on this watchlist;

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/ActivityPub-server-watchlist

FYI they both need some major updates, but I was recently shouldertapped to take over as Lead Goose, and we're working on it!

- Fediverse.Party - explore federated networks

Let's make social media free, federated and fun! Fediverse.Party is your guide into the world of decentralized, autonomous networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. No ads and no algorithms. Join Fediverse and become part of the new interconnected Web!

Just added wanderer.to to that AP watchlist, and I'll add your project to our 'considering federation' watchlist for now;

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/wiki/considering-federation-watchlist

Just so I can find you and this thread again. But as soon as you commit to implementing ActivityPub, please let me know, and I'll move gobikecamping.com to the main watchlist.

FYI This old wiki page is also heavily out-of-date and may be due for retirement. We're still deciding.

@mensrea @clew this is interesting! can you tell me more about how this works? are you one of the maintainers?
@spencexyz @clew no and no. I came across it the other day and it was still in my tabs. the dev is here though
@spencexyz I suspect you’ve already found him, but if not it looks like @javahippie is the awesomeness behind FitPub.
@kaleb @javahippie hey Tim, I'd love to check out your project. I tried to sign up but I need a registration password. Would you be able to DM me one?

hey @Bonfire ! i saw this thread and thought you might be interested. there are currently solutions like OpenTracks for tracking physical activity statistics, but none have direct integration with ActivityPub for social sharing. A bonfire extension to integrate with an existing activity tracker could help many cyclists, hikers, runners, and more activity clubs migrate from Strava to communities on the fediverse

That'd be a cool extension indeed! Have you also looked at wanderer.to ?

@Bonfire @memoria @clew sorry, I'm new to all of this. What do the bonfire extensions do? How do they work? I was just on the website but I'm still a little unclear how they work.

Hey @haraldkliems, you’ve had a lot of experience with Strava and the various alternatives, right? Any thoughts on what would make an open – and possibly federated – alternative viable?

@spencexyz

@kaleb @haraldkliems do you have any recs for good alternatives?
