Let's talk about the #OpenSource software you're happy to *pay* for.

A one time "pay what you want" payment counts (such as for @thunderbird or @elementary). Recurring donations count too (Paypal/Patreon), and so do things like buying a "Pro" version.

MY ANSWER: Two terrific apps spring to mind which I've continued to use constantly.
1) Standard Notes
2) Aptik (#Linux backup software).

How about you?

#FOSS

@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary Haven't used those two but I'm always happy to pay for a good product, open source or not. Heck I've even paid a little bit to my nice Fediverse admin.

It's nice when you're not the thing being sold ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@OtherRetroMatt I'll drink to that! I also donated $8 my instance admin, and I should just keep doing that every month.

@killyourfm

I usually pay by contributing.

We have some Android devices with Google Play here (not mine).
There we pay for apps like OsmAnd.

@thunderbird @elementary

@RyunoKi @thunderbird @elementary Contributing is also very valuable!

@killyourfm
It can take different shapes as well!
Not only code but also issue triaging, documentation, design, evangelism etc.

I like to connect people across projects as well (but will likely have to start focusing on a few ones to build up reputation).

@thunderbird @elementary

@killyourfm
Top of my head:
kitty terminal emulator,
palemoon browser,
matrix server/protocol
@ruskie Thank you -- this reminds me I should donate to the #Element devs.
@killyourfm I guess you've given me a reason to support something. Gonna have to do some donation
@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary i definitely should pay to more projects than i had pay, i have pay elementary, even tho i don't use them, i had pay gnome, i had pay to simple mobile apps, i had pay for netguard, i think that was it, clearly i am missing something else, i need to sort out my money but i will pay to kde, even tho i don't use it, and other projects that i believe they are a great support, even tho, i might don't use them
@keyshooter @thunderbird @elementary Same here. Need to donate to more projects. I also want to donate to the @heroiclauncher team.

@killyourfm I've donated to my instance admin and also to several mobile Linux related projects:

box86 - x86 on ARM emulator

tow-boot - bootloader for #PinePhone and #PinePhonePro

postmarketOS - mobile Linux distro

Also some others:

UVTools - resin printer file format converter (beats paying subscription fees for a shitty proprietary slicer)

hueplusplus - Philips Hue library I use in #OpenRGB

@CalcProgrammer1 @killyourfm box86 accepts donations? I have to take a look!
Same for TowBoot ๐Ÿ˜
@pak0st @killyourfm Yeah through GitHub Sponsors. I sponsored devs of those projects monthly.
@CalcProgrammer1 @killyourfm that explains it. I haven't used GitHub Sponsors yet ๐Ÿ‘
@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary "#qcad Professional", a 2D CAD program that I use to edit my customers' factory layouts in #dwg.
@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary
LibreOffice, Firefox, Wine, KDE

@taketwo @thunderbird @elementary It's nice to see people mention Wine.

Especially since Proton wouldn't exist without it.

@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary Libre office donation is what I do each year. ZorinOS and bitwarden

@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary

Definitely Bitwarden; there have been a few projects I've donated to and/or paid for before (LibreOffice, elementary, some other distros), but Bitwarden has been a constant for me

@killyourfm
#ardour
An excellent digital audio workstation. It's a twenty year old project and somehow still gets better with every release.
@thunderbird @elementary
@killyourfm Aseprite is a lovely little pixel art editor. Its open source nature makes it easy to integrate and script into my gameโ€™s build tools. I also donate to Gnome, KDE, SDL, and Firefox.
@slembcke @killyourfm
We shouldn't forget Mastodon and the instances in that list.
There are lots of new users and the hardware probably needs a replacement for a few instances.

@taketwo @slembcke True. I think I'm going to split a donation between Mastodon and my instance admin.

I love this place way too much not to.

@taketwo @killyourfm True. The gamedev instance Iโ€™m on might start a Patreon, but so far hasnโ€™t announced anything. I dou mind supporting that vs filling a billionaireโ€™s pockets on top of their ad revenue.
@killyourfm I've been making small regular donations to @streetcomplete for a while, their #openstreetmap editor has transformed how easy it is to contribute data to the map.
@jmbmkn @killyourfm SAME! and @MapComplete as well. The names are confusing, but they're different. Each does it's own thing differently better/worse than the other. Depending on what I want to add or how you want to add it, I switch between them
@elementary @killyourfm @thunderbird Linux. Plain and simple. Funds would go directly towards the Kernel development.
@pnpnerd @elementary @thunderbird Honest question: how do you donate directly to kernel development? I'm interested in doing so.
@killyourfm @pnpnerd @elementary @thunderbird Send patches or bug reports, that's more than enough.
@elementary @thunderbird @killyourfm at the moment, thereโ€™s no direct way as far as I know. Maybe through the Linux Foundation?
@killyourfm HomeAssistant - I pay for their remote access service as my monthly donation (even though I could set it up myself) as itโ€™s such an integral part of our home and lives. Every socket, light, radiator and more to make our home a more convenient place to live.
@killyourfm I've got small recurring donations to the #Xfce desktop environment, and my three favourite Android apps: my podcast app @AntennaPod, #StreetComplete an #OpenStreetMap editor for Android and @fdroidorg the FOSS app store.
All of them probably deserve more than I'm giving though ๐Ÿ˜…

@killyourfm

#Opensource software I'm contributing for right now:

@Mastodon (Patreon)
@bitwarden (Premium)

@killyourfm during this 2023 I'll support also @pop_os_official. I've been using it for about 2 years in all household computers and I want to give back. I'm on the "install it and forget about it" mindset, and Pop!_OS is perfect for that IMO.

@xemafuentes @pop_os_official I've been this exact same way with Kubuntu for almost 18 months now. Definitely need to donate.

It's staggering how many projects I want to contribute to once I sit down and start making that list.
