Neat. I've got some homework.

Recently, we(#Xfce) had a U.S. university run a #usability study against the https://www.xfce.org website.

We've got the results of the study back a couple of weeks ago, and there's about 100 pages of evaluation, explanation of methodology, and recommendations for improvement.

I'm looking forward to reading through all of this to help give me a better grasp on areas of improvement.

It's also a good push for me to start thinking better about #accessibility #a11y

Hopefully, I can take some of these recommendations over to improving https://docs.xfce.org

Xfce Desktop Environment

Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly.

Testing... I can wait.

I’ve been using Linux Mint for several years now, but I’m not 100% happy anymore.

My laptop is old:

Lenovo ThinkPad X250
Intel i5-5200U
4 GB RAM
128 GB SSD
Intel HD Graphics 5500

Currently running Linux Mint Xfce, but I’d like to see what else is out there.

What distro would you recommend for this setup?

The kids PC I set up for my nephews finally got some games too!
Not so they end up trapped in Roblox hell, but so they have local/offline alternatives 🐧💜

It’s honestly surprising how much still runs on an old OptiPlex 790 (Intel HD 2000) with Debian + XFCE + Bottles... even if some games clearly prefer window mode XD

Setup includes: nftables, dnsmasq, hardened Firefox, local Invidious instance, time limits, privacy-friendly/FOSS software, indie games & learning tools.

I think people know I'm an @xfce girlie. But for tablets/touch and Wayland my setup consists of @gnome plus "dash to panel", "ArcMenu", "Desktop icons NG" extensions - fantastic. Those plus Ubuntu tiling assistant, Ubuntu app indicators and an honorable mention to the system monitor (the one by @fmuellner). Someone should honestly make a desktop with those defaults. #gnu #linux #gnome #xfce

#Alpine en unas 8 GB de disco duro que olvidé que tenía desocupadas, así que decidí cambiar y probar algo nuevo, aunque no es mi sistema principal, he logrado personalizar un poco este #XFCE y aprender sobre #OpenRC

Looking for folks involved & enthusiastic in providing #Xfce support who may also be interested in becoming a moderator for the Xfce community in the #Fediverse

The default XFCE theme on Void Linux looks good. The Void Linux live USB also booted really fast.

The PClinuxOS live USB for XFCE seemed to take forever to boot. Progress bar got about half way after several minutes and I just gave up. Void booted into XFCE in what seemed like just a few seconds.

The installer on Void is not as easy to use as the Artix installer.

Void is similar to Artix in that it is also a rolling release distro, but doesn't have the high frequency of package updates that Arch (Artix) does. So it is a much more stable rolling distro that doesn't require multi-gigabyte downloads for updates every week.

XFCE is the only desktop option provided on a live USB installer by Void Linux.

Note: I had to install the 'fastfetch' and 'scrot' packages on the live boot to be able to take this screenshot.

Just a quick screenshot from an Artix with XFCE live boot.

Already I am feeling better about XFCE than MATE. The "Ctrl + Alt + t" keyboard shortcut for bringing up a termal works, in MATE it doesn't by default.

Without messing with it too much, it also seems more easily customizable.

Will report more later.
