RE: https://masto.ai/@phoronix/116476120066302561

I literally just moved most of my computers to #Linux (#ZorinOS, a variant of #Ubuntu) to avoid the #GenAI imposition of #MicroSlop and now Ubuntu wants to add genAI in their OS?
NOOOOOO 😱😖🤢

Now is the time to push back on this! We don't want genAI!!! The rare people who think they want it can do that on their own and separately from the OS!

Yes, I could move to another distribution but #Ubuntu is the only one supported by my workplace 😭

Update #1, part 3 (End)

The Ugly: I could not find several apps that I was counting on. Yes, there is undoubtedly a way to install them, and perhaps a less tech-savvy user wouldn't care. That's why this goes under "ugly" instead of "bad." The other ugly aspect was that Zorin comes with the Brave browser, which I didn't want and—mysteriously—could find no way to uninstall without dropping into the terminal. It didn't even show up on the list of installed software in their "Software" app.

All in all, I think I'll try Mint next. I've used it before, but it's been a few years.

Update #1, part 2

The Bad: There's only one real drawback I encountered using Zorin, but it's a big one. The Software app, the only way (as far as I could tell) to install software without the terminal, is clunky as heck—there's no way that I could see to search for anything. There are several overarching categories (Work, Develop, Create...) but no subcategories; I could find no way to, say, see all the web browsers or all the word processors in one spot. And the large categories themselves seemed rather arbitrary (why were browsers in "Social"? Surely there are other uses for browsers than being social). The only way to find software was to guess which of the six categories it was in and then scroll through the list, which was organized alphabetically by title.

Update #1, part 1

The Good: Zorin installed like a charm. It really was easy, held my hand all the way through, and makes a point of giving you a clear set of "getting started" instructions all in one place and an easy to use interface for most things. No hardware issues, period.

I feel it's important that lay people/ non-nerds be able to use software and hardware beyond the Apple/ Microsoft/ Big Tech monopolies. I don't believe they should be expected to learn nerdy stuff to do so.

So I'm trying right now to install Linux on an old Surface laptop I picked up cheap, and I'm trying to do it in as simple and normie-friendly as possible. Can this be done?

Thus far, I've had to burn the Zorin ISO to a thumb drive and turn off secure boot. I don't really see how someone can get around these, but at least it's minimal enough of a bar. Zorin is installing.

Assuming all goes well, I'll try setting up and using software with only the GUI tools they provide and minimal searching for help.

Stay tuned.
