I guess I'll fire off an #introduction like all of the cool kids are doing... Hashtags incoming!

Hello, I'm Tali, a #MolecularBiologist turned #SoftwareEngineer now doing cool stuff at #GitHub. Mostly into #ruby and #python but slowly learning #javascript and #react

I have just a few hobbies... #knitting #gardening #embroidery #CrossStitch #crochet #aquascaping #ModularOrigami #a11y #needlepoint #volunteering #parrots #sustainability #HousePlants #FiberArts #improv #MechanicalKeyboards...

... #photography #AIArt #thrifting #90DayFiancรฉ #MachineLearning #OpenSource #DevTools etc. etc.

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

I'm not sure any one mastodon instance encompasses all of these things, but for now I'm chillin on #hachyderm

Also! I love to mentor other #womenintech and #CareerChangers , particularly those coming from #LifeSciences

Here's a #podcast interview I did talking about my story and how to spin your narrative when making a career pivot

Also I forgot #DystopianScienceFiction

We Belong Here: Lessons from Unconventional Paths to Tech

A weekly podcast hosted by Lauren Lee that aims to interview career changers & folks that are diversifying the tech industry.

@Tali Hi Tali! Happy to connect  I'm Michele, Boston (US) based and currently the head of #marketing at a start-up that has developed spreadsheet-like databases. Was in #AI Voice space for 4yrs before jumping into #data space! Love mentoring/connecting- founded a regional #womenintech meetup. Interested in #ethicaltech #accessibility #diversity & #equity. Also super into food, dogs, street photog., travel, & I am #neurodiverse
@Tali
Hello and welcome! What kinda keyboard do you use?
@Tali I'm a fiber artist and bird lady too! I love #knitting #spinning and recently #weaving , and have a sun #conure and Quaker #parrot
@Aratinga ahhh pics pls! (of all the things)
@Tali pictures!
@Aratinga beautiful babies and yarn!!
@Tali Hello ๐Ÿ‘‹ What drove you away from molecular biology? Have you found there were any transferable concepts or skills moving into tech? Love hearing about the different backgrounds folks have in engineering.

@bluespore I always had a strong interest in tech but switched to taking comp sci courses in uni too late to get a degree. I didn't want to get a PhD in biology and it wasn't viable to be a life-long laboratory technician, so my hand was kind of forced tbh

I think molecular bio translates REALLY well to programming - it's a similar type of systems/pathway thinking and a good understanding of experimental design has been useful in SO many parts of my (second) career

@Tali I love that! Do you have an example of something that translated really well? Like an "A-ha!" moment?
@Tali Iโ€™m also a software developer and improviser ๐Ÿ˜บ
@Tali Iโ€™m going to need aquascape and bird pics ๐Ÿ‘€

@goblin allow me to kick it off with a pic of one of my new dwarf lobsters ๐Ÿฅน

#aquariums #aquascaping

@Tali you are toooooo cool and you need to look at my shrimp christmas Al art ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆž
@Tali @goblin beautiful lobster! I have marmorkrebs- interesting because they clone themselves without any males, but very drab. Yours is so pretty! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿฆž
@Tali I had to follow you, partly because I named my pup Tali (short for Talulah Blue). Also for the conure or whatever kind of bird that is.
