The #Mormon leader #JosephSmith was dragged from his bedroom in Hiram, OH, then beaten, strangled, #TarredAndFeathered, and left for dead on #ThisDayInHistory in 1832. (He survived.) The probable reason for the attack was his cult's practice of taking the property of its members.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1805, #JosephSmith was born in VT. Founder of the #LatterDaySaints movement & #LDS Church, Smith is a controversial figure, known for dictatorial politics & #polygyny. Distinctive #Mormon cosmology & theology make it a curious splinter from #Christianity.
In today's Lodi Wine post (https://www.lodiwine.com/blog/Further-proof-that-Grenache-absolutely-sings-in-Lodi-s-Mediterranean-climate-terroir), Rippey Family's 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Sweepstake award (for "best red wine" in the entire judging) is further proof that Grenache absolutely sings in Lodi's Mediterranean climate, especially as appreciation for lighter, purer, floral, spice scented red wines increases.

Abba Vineyard Grenache on the east side of Lodi's Mokelumne River AVA. Lodi always wins more than its share of top awards in blind tasting competitions manned by professional wine judges. So much, it's hard to keep up with them.  We have to make special mention, though, of one result from the 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition announced just this past January, in which the 'Red Sweepstake Medal" winner was the 2023 Rippey Family Vineyards Abba Vineyard Lodi Grenache ($34)...

The differences in this account and the canonized one? This one focuses on Joseph's personal forgiveness and there is much less from God about the apostate world, since Joseph has already concluded there wasn't a true church, while this conclusion is given by good in the later account. Also a huge glaring difference is only one divine being is mentioned (the Lord), not two, which interestingly is consistent with Joseph's understanding and teaching on the godhead during this time. #josephsmith

The 1832 account is the earliest known version, written in Joseph Smith’s own handwriting 12 years after the event and there is no other contemporary record from anyone. It was written in a letterbook but never publicly known until the 1960s. This version was removed from the letterbook and hidden in a safe when Joseph Fielding Smith first found it because it was so strange.

Hinckley says he's not worried that Joseph Smith's multiple versions of his First Vision. He dismisses these different versions of the vision without ever mentioning any differences in the accounts. His goal is calming members who have heard of these strange accounts, and hope they will not look at them.

Why Worry about Different Versions of the First Vision - wasmormon.org

In 1983, Gordon B. Hinckley, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency, but later President of the Church spoke to students at the Salt Lake Institute of Religion. An edited version of this address was then given as the First Presidency Message in the October 1984 Ensign. The message, God Hath Not Given Us the

https://wasmormon.org/joseph-smith-was-a-glass-looking-treasure-digger/ The church denied the strange magic practices of Joseph's Smith. Facts they now claim were commonplace. The church apologists yearn to dismiss the practices as astrology or gambling today, but does that make them better? They denied Joseph was involved and that he used his seer stone for treasure digging out translation.

Joseph Smith was a Glass Looking Treasure Digger - wasmormon.org

Today, the fact that Joseph Smith was involved in treasure digging is undisputed, yet still hardly common knowledge among members of the church. This is likely due to the historic denials from church leadership on Joseph and any such occult practices. The church has sought to distance itself from the strange magic practices of the
