Used to regret never having visited Europe but no problem: the US has turned into 1930s Germany!

Also never have used a time machine but no problem: the US has actually never left the antebellum South!

@volkris

I didn't say "having a High Court is moot". I said if the outcome was predictable, it WOULD BE moot/pointless.

But I understand what you are saying. You'd still need that "rubber stamp" of confirmation.

...but in the end, that's all it would be: a rubber stamp.

Rubber stamps are not conducive to a democracy. That's how we got #JimCrow in the early 1900's (and how we are seeing #JimCrow2.0 under T****.)

Yesterday, @CrayfishMag Issue Number 3 went live! This issue includes my bit of memoir, "Golgotha:" https://www.crayfishmag.com/david-milley-golgotha

This story, another about my experiences as a kid in Orangeburg in the early 1960s, was painful to write, but I'm glad I stuck with it. In those days, I lived in the shadow of tumultuous events from which my parents, fully involved, tried to shield me.

Today in Labor History June 7, 1892: The authorities arrested Homer Plessy for refusing to leave his seat in the "whites-only" car of a train. He lost the resulting court case, the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision, which codified segregation and paved the way for Jim Crow. The ruling is commonly known as “separate, but equal,” and was later ruled “unequal” in actuality, in 1954, in Brown v Board of Education.

On the one-year anniversary of Plessy’s act of civil disobedience, Mahatma Gandhi was forcibly ejected from a train in Pietermaritzberg, South Africa for refusing to vacate a 1st class carriage for a white man, in a similar act of civil disobedience.

On this day in 1892, Homer Plessy, a free-born "octoroon" (one-eighth black), agreed to be arrested for riding in the whites only car, New Orleans to Covington LA.
It would lead to one of the worst #SupremeCourt decisions in history, Plessy v. Ferguson 1896, which legitimized "separate but equal" & ushered in the #JimCrow era.
Of course, the #RobertsCourt recently said "hold my beer" w the Callais decision...

Since #SCOTUS’ April ruling, largely #white #Republican-led legislatures across the #South have moved to dismantle #Black political #power at stunning speed, breaking apart voting blocs at the urging of a failing president desperate to keep control of #Congress in this fall’s midterm #elections.

The suggestion that partisan #gerrymandering has nothing to do with race is fantastical. It ignores the defining role of #race & #racism in shaping partisan affiliation in the #US. For instance, the embrace of the #CivilRights movement by the national #DemocraticParty is, acc/to many historians, the main reason so many white Southerners became #Republicans in the second part of the 20th century, a phenomenon known as realignment.

#Black Americans have carried extraordinary burdens in the #UnitedStates, not only to exercise their own rights but also to make the country a #democracy. The #VotingRightsAct, passed in 1965 & strengthened in the decades that followed, had protected them from #RacialGerrymandering that divided them across multiple districts to blunt the impact of their votes. This was just one of a multitude of tactics Southern officials used to limit Black #suffrage & stifle competition during #JimCrow.

Opinion | The Betrayal of Black Voters Threatens Our Democracy

The sweeping effort to dismantle Black-majority congressional districts in the South will have far-reaching consequences for all Americans, and for our democracy.
