Alabama is asking the Supreme Court to allow it to use a congressional map favoring Republicans in this year’s elections, despite a lower court's ruling the map intentionally discriminates against Black people. The state filed an emergency appeal with the justices Wednesday, a day after a three-judge court blocked a map with a Black majority in just one of Alabama's seven congressional districts. The judges ordered Alabama to use a court-ordered map with two districts with large Black populations. The appeal is the latest development following last month’s Supreme Court ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act and part of a broader push by President Donald Trump to try to preserve Republicans’ slim House majority.

The South Carolina Senate has rejected President Donald Trump’s push to redraw the state’s congressional districts in hopes Republicans could gain an extra seat. The proposal passed the South Carolina House on May 20 after two days of long debate. But senators rejected the effort Tuesday, as early in-person voting got underway for the state's June 9 primaries. Some senators said it was simply too late to make a change. Others worried the move could backfire and get an extra Democrat elected to the U.S. House. The proposal would have scheduled a special primary in August for the new congressional map.
If the case makes it to #SCOTUS, it will be the first major test of the high court’s new standard for challenging congressional maps. The lower court judges made clear that they had reviewed the arguments through the lens of the Supreme Court’s #VotingRightsAct ruling last month but maintained that the state’s map failed under the new standard by intentionally discriminating against #Black voters.

#Alabama’s AG, Steve Marshall, said he would immediately appeal to #SCOTUS, which last month ruled that a #Louisiana congressional map drawn to create 2 majority-#Black House districts was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Gov Kay Ivey, a Republican, has already set special primaries in August in 4 #House districts that would be affected by her state’s new congressional map.
