Federal judge orders special elections for Mississippi Supreme Court

A judge on Friday ordered special elections for the Mississippi Supreme Court after earlier finding that the electoral map used to select justices violated the Voting Rights Act. U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock, who issued the Friday ruling, concluded the map dilutes the power of Black voters. A 2022 lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union challenged the map, arguing it cut a historically Black area in half. In her August ruling, Aycock noted only four Black people have served on Mississippi’s Supreme Court. The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali – „Green Book“ (2019)

(ARD, Wh)

So worth reading about the three featured lives and their communities.

Today in Labor History December 18, 1865: US Secretary of State William Seward proclaimed the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment, prohibiting slavery throughout the USA. However, the thirteenth amendment included the following clause: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Jim Crow laws in the past and racial profiling today result in large numbers of African Americans and poor people being incarcerated and subjected to legal slavery. Some were even rented out to the same plantations that had used chattel slaves in the past. But with the U.S. having both the world’s highest number of incarcerated people (2.1 million) and the highest incarceration rate (665 per 100,000), there are plenty of people from all ethnicities who continue to be subjected to legal slavery.

The #CivilRightsCongress, a US #CivilRights group, presented to the #UnitedNations on #ThisDayInHistory in 1951 a well-argued paper called #WeChargeGenocide. Specifically, it said the United States was guilty of #genocide due to #JimCrow & routine #lynching of #AfricanAmericans.

Consider what happened in Texas in 2010. As part of a highly publicized revamp of the state social studies curriculum, the Republican-controlled Texas Board of Education removed slavery as the central cause of the Civil War and replaced it with states' rights and secession, with Republican board member Patricia Hardy calling slavery "an after issue." The Republican members also considered referring to the slave trade as the "Atlantic Triangular Trade" before finally settling on "Transatlantic Slave Trade."

The new curriculum was silent on the KKK during Reconstruction and failed to mention the Jim Crow era at all. It also equated Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln.

In addition, the curriculum claimed that Joseph McCarthy was correct when he said the U.S. government had been infiltrated by communists in the 1950s, included lessons on why the U.S. needs to return to the gold standard, and asserted that the United Nations, International Criminal Court, and global environmental initiatives undermined U.S. sovereignty. And it scrubbed any mention of Thomas Jefferson's role in U.S. history because he advocated for the separation of church and state.

TWISTED SOURCES: How Confederate propaganda ended up in the South's schoolbooks | Facing South

Though better known these days for erecting statues to Confederate veterans during the Jim Crow era, the United Daughters of the Confederacy also promoted white supremacist Lost Cause propaganda through their campaigns to control history textbooks used in the South's public schools. That miseducation continues to haunt our politics today.
