Post-Dispatch reporter Paul Y. Anderson, #OnThisDay in 1925, took note of the Ku Klux Klan’s growing embrace of the Republican Party. Increasingly shunned by the South’s entrenched Democratic establishment, the KKK was spreading north and west, finding allies. In St. Louis, where the Klan recruited thousands in the early 1920s, the GOP candidate for mayor publicly disavowed the Klan. But when he won in April 1925, a small cross was burned outside City Hall in celebration. #GOP #KKK #stlouis

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1916, #WoodrowWilson won reëlection. His campaign was the first to use the slogan #AmericaFirst. It was subsequently adopted by the #KKK (of which Wilson was a backer and promoter), then later by their #WhiteSupremacist descendants the #MAGA movement.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1927, 15 #IWW members were arrested at a restaurant in #Walsenburg. This occurred during the 1927-1928 #ColoradoCoalStrike, in which Wobblies were careful to follow CO law to the letter, but were still beaten, arrested, and killed by #police and the #KKK.
