About #SOIL (from #Wikipedia):

"#SustainableOrganicIntegratedLivelihoods or SOIL is an American nonprofit developmental aid organization co-founded by Sasha Kramer and Sarah Brownell in 2006. Its goal is to develop integrated approaches to the problems of #poverty, poor #PublicHealth, #agricultural productivity, and #EnvironmentalDestruction in #Haiti. SOIL's efforts have focused on the community-identified priority of increasing access to #EcologicalSanitation, where #HumanWastes are converted into #compost. More than 20,000 Haitians are currently using SOIL ecological sanitation toilets.

"#EkoLakay is a container-based household sanitation service in #CapHaitien and #PortAuPrince. Clients pay a low monthly service fee of around US$4. The service includes toilet rental, the provision of at least one bucket of carbon-based cover material each week, as well as weekly pick up of buckets full of wastes. SOIL designs and builds low-cost ecological sanitation toilets made from locally available materials. The primary design that SOIL builds are called urine diversion, or dry toilets that separate the #urine and the #feces through the use of a specially designed #ToiletSeat. The sterile urine is used directly as a #fertilizer or diverted into #SoakawayPits. The feces is treated through a process of managed #composting [#ThermophilicComposting] to ensure that all #pathogens have been killed and the resulting #compost is safe for #AgriculturalUse.

"#EkoMobil is a mobile toilet service [#PortAPotty] that SOIL offers to construction sites, cultural events, and others in need of mobile sanitation. EkoMobil uses the same container-based ecological sanitation technology as EkoLakay.

"Waste collected from SOIL's ecological sanitation toilets, as well as the ecological sanitation toilets of other organizations in Haiti, are treated through a process of managed thermophilic composting at SOIL's composting waste treatment sites. The process exceeds standards set by the #WorldHealthOrganization (#WHO) for the safe treatment of #HumanWaste. SOIL tests all wastes in their laboratory before bagging and selling it under the brand name #KonpòsLakay. Since 2006, SOIL has produced over 250 metric tons of compost.

"In 2011, SOIL published The SOIL Guide to Ecological Sanitation. This document describes SOIL's five years of ecological sanitation experience in Haiti. It covers topics such as toilet designs, management strategies, composting techniques, and lessons learned. The SOIL Guide is available in English and Haitian Creole."

This is pretty cool! TY to @clew for making me aware of SOIL!

Transforming #Waste into Resources

#SOIL is combatting the sanitation crisis in #Haiti by expanding access to dignified and safely managed #sanitation.

"Since 2006, SOIL has been transforming wastes into resources in Haiti. By offering a container based toilet and #composting waste treatment, SOIL is working to create a revolutionary social business model for providing access to safe, dignified sanitation that produces rich, #OrganicCompost as a natural resource for Haiti's badly depleted soils, while also creating economic opportunities in some of the world's most under-resourced communities.

"Today, more than 4,300 households rely on SOIL’s #EkoLakay container-based sanitation service. Through #EcologicalSanitation and #thermophilic composting, SOIL safely transforms more than 1,300 metric tons of waste into #AgriculturalGrade #compost annually while mitigating over 3,000 metric tons of #CO2e each year through aerobic waste treatment processes."

I can't stress enough how important it is to close the nutrient cycle and utilize human excrements as fertilizers. We would save so much resources and energy while decreasing the environmental impact of our horribly expensive and inefficient sewage system and fertilizer production.

Yes, there are challenges when using human excrements (mainly pathogens and pharmaceutics), but the hazards are mostly much lower than people think, and solvable.

Of course. Coincidentally, right now I am sitting on a dataset about experiments using urine and faeces as fertilizers (#HuManure).
Especially #urine is a very convenient fertilizer. The largest share of N and P is excreted via urine. Shit is mostly carbon, which is nice and necessary, but since there are also the pathogens, urine is way easier to handle.
It will come, no doubt.

Flushing toilets, used only by the last three generations or so, are stealing our autonomy and wasting precious water.

To the rebels with separating toilets and compost systems, I salute you. Let’s end compulsory consumption (and pollution) that pays privatised water companies millions in profit.
