The third album by Tenacious D proved to be a strong "comeback" at the time, in my opinion, following the disappointment of their 2006 film 'The Pick Of Destiny' flopping at the cinemas, despite its cult status over the years and its solid soundtrack. However, the latter does require viewers to have seen the film to fully grasp the context of the songs, although some work well independently. Appropriately titled 'Rize Of The Fenix', it symbolises emerging from the ashes of the flop like a phoenix, reborn stronger. The album boasts several memorable tracks, including the face-melting self-titled opener (their best opener!), "Roadie" β a tribute to all concert roadies, the unsung heroes that keep artists sounding good live, and my personal favourite deep cut, "The Ballad Of Hollywood Jack And The Rage Kage", to name a few. Additionally, skits, reminiscent of their debut album, returned and added further humorous moments. Of course, given their comedic rock style, enjoyment depends on one's taste for humour, making it understandable that it is not everyone's cup of tea. My only gripe is the brevity of some tracks on the second side of the album, leaving them feeling unfinished or abrupt, a trend I have noticed in the band's recent work, which is quite irritating. Overall, I have always considered 'Rize Of The Fenix' to be quite on par with their debut album, albeit lacking the novelty factor, and currently stands as their last commendable album in my opinion β sadly, their subsequent and latest album, 'Post-Apocalypto', is forgettable and should probably be erased from existence!
