In the summer of 2022, a research cruise detected a massive harmful algal bloom (HAB) in the Bering Strait region of western Alaska. There is currently no graphite production in the US, and this site north of Nome in the Bering Strait region is the largest known graphite deposit. If it is developed, it would be a big user of the Port of Nome, where a big upgrade is planned.
