A tragedy in Southeast Alaska shows the dangers of extreme rainfall in mountainous terrain -- something that's expected to increase as the climate continues to warm. It's really hard to predict these landslides, especially across vast Alaska and especially with a scarcity of even background data. A scary and sobering situation. #climatechange #Alaska #landslides

Deadly Wrangell landslide is part of a pattern in vulnerable Alaska mountainous terrain - Alaska Beacon

With vast terrain, lack of information and climate change adding to landslide risks, developing Alaska safety programs will be difficult.

Changes in the Arctic and in the North Pacific/Bering Sea region are pushing humpback whales into very high latitudes. This may be a result of climate change -- reduced sea ice and shifts in the food web -- or humpback whale population increases, or maybe some combination of factors. Additionally, humpback whales are not the only more southern whales starting to mingle in bowhead territory. #Arctic #Alaska #whales #climatechange #humpbackwhales #bowheadwhales

The whales that are known for migrating to Alaska annually from warm climates are extending their range far to the north.

The crab situation in the eastern Bering Sea continues to be bad, and climate change plus ocean acidification seem to be emerging as culprits. It's not clear what kind of harvest will be allowed there in the coming year, if any. We'll learn that soon, after the Alaska Department of Fish and Game fully analyzes the numbers and all the factors involved. Recovery of the crab stocks -- if it even happens -- is expected to take years. #crab #beringsea #climatechange #alaska

Bering Sea crab surveys show populations still low a year after marquee Alaska harvests closed - Alaska Beacon

The snow crab population in the southeastern Bering Sea is in even worse shape than it was last year, when the state canceled the harvest.

A combination of lifestyles and circumstances is not serving Alaskans' health very well. Personal note: I had to read my own story a few times for motivation on Monday to get off the couch. I finally made it to the gym at 9 p.m. #Alaska #health #chronicillness

Report: Alaskans dogged by chronic diseases and many lack healthy lifestyles or regular screenings - Alaska Beacon

Alaskans have high rates of obesity, high blood pressure and other conditions that harm health, and many skip regular exercise, report finds.
