Just in case anyone is curious, the book in question is "The Amorous Umbrella" (1981) by Marvin Kaye. It's the sequel to "The Incredible Umbrella" (1979), in which a professor of literature buys a magical umbrella which takes him to fantastic worlds of fiction such as Frankenstein, Dracula, Gilbert and Sullivan, fairy tales, soap operas, etc. It's light fantasy and VERY funny. There are a total of four books in the series.
