Doodle 087: Nose Witness.

Smell is the only major sense with no recording medium. The Odeuropa project trained AI to mine smell references from 167,000 books across four centuries: and found 2.5 million "nose witness accounts" hiding in text all along.

The archive was always there. The extraction tool wasn't.

This study about people's perception of colour has significant parallels to sense of smell.

Although this research suggests the ability to distinguish between colours is very similar among people, it is known that
some people lack the ability to detect some aromas.

But they do note that the lexicon used to describe them varies with experience, much the same as having greater vocabulary to describe wine aromas distinguishes "experts" from novices

Exciting new research shows that our sense of smell is much faster and more sensitive than once believed! Scientists found that humans can detect tiny changes in odors within just milliseconds, challenging the idea that our noses are less precise than other senses. This discovery could revolutionize how we understand scent and its impact on our daily lives!

Tyrannosaurus rex's olfactory bulbs - the part of the brain responsible for processing smell - were unusually large. This suggests that T. rex had an excellent sense of smell, possibly one of the best among terrestrial animals, rivaling even modern vultures.

Urgh! It looks like I'm anosmic to violets now. I'm sure I could smell them before, so perhaps this last bout of COVID has left its mark! :-(

Some have a differing sensation of smells after Covid rather than losing their sense of smell. A treatment for blocking nerve pain is being tested for it and seems to bring back the correct sense of aromas, but this is yet unpublished work, so we will need to wait for the peer-review process to do its thing...

An Experimental Treatment Could Help COVID Smell Distortion

An injection that targets nerves in the neck appears to relieve parosmia related to COVID infection in some people, but more rigorous studies are needed
