My sundew blooms have all faded, and now I'm waiting for the seeds to ripen. I cut off the flower stalk and saved it in an envelope to avoid them spilling into random containers nearby. Now we wait! #carnivorousplants #SeedSaver
Today I’m delivering seeds to feed Indigenous communities. Jacobs cattle beans grown by my parents, Kahnawake pole beans grown by me, parsnips and poblano pepper seeds I produced, and potato squash seeds I saved from a local organic gardener. #IndigenousMutualAid #FoodSovereignty #IndigenousFoodSovereignty #IndigenousMastodon #NativeMastodon #Seeds #SeedSaver #gardening #beans #peppers #squash

Interview with Rowan White of Sierra Seeds and Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance on seed saving.

- every gardener used to save seeds. Seed companies as a concept are only 200 years old.

- hybrid vigor is from crossing two inbred plants that were bred for high yield or ease of shipping and are now struggling.

- Breed for diversity to get plants adaptable to climate change

- Big box seeds require high inputs

Indigenous Seedkeeping: Caring for our Three Sisters - with Rowen White

In this third session of the "Strategies for Success in the Time of Climate Change" series, we were joined by Rowen White. Rowen is a Seedkeeper and farmer from the Mohawk community of Akwesasne, and a passionate activist for Indigenous seed and food sovereignty. She is the director and founder of Sierra Seeds, an innovative organic seed stewardship organization focusing on local seed and education, based in Nevada City, CA. Rowen is the Program Coordinator and advisor for the Indigenous Seedkeepers Network, an initiative of the Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance. The mission of the Indigenous Seedkeepers Network is to nourish and assist the growing Seed Sovereignty movement across Turtle Island. Rowen's passion is in teaching and mentoring, and has developed many curricula which focus on holistic, Indigenous permaculture based approaches to seed stewardship which honor the many layers of seed culture; from practical hands-on skills, cultural context, and memory with guiding principles that are rooted in an Indigenous ecology of relations. Rowen weaves stories of seeds, food, culture, and sacred Earth stewardship on her blog, Seed Songs. You can follow Rowen's seed journeys at sierraseeds.org, and learn more about the Indigenous Seedkeepers Network at www.nativefoodalliance.org. In this webinar, Rowen presents "Indigenous Seedkeeping: Caring for our Three Sisters Seeds". Indigenous seeds are a vibrant and vital foundation for food sovereignty and are the basis for sustainable, healthy agriculture. Seeds are our precious collective inheritance and it is our responsibility to care for the seeds as part of our responsibility to feed and nourish ourselves and future generations. Join us as we talk about the creative and practical ways of re-integrating seed stewardship back into our local communities, and how we can deepen our understanding of the nourishing cycles of life.

Bean harvest (so far). Unfortunately, the names of each bean washed off the markers I made for each pot. I can’t remember the name of the four black beans. They did not do well where I planted them, so those four seeds are all I’ve got for next year. The other beans are skunk beans (black and white), cranberry beans (cranberry red), and Kahnawake beans (tan and chocolate brown). I have blue beans as well, but they aren’t ready to harvest yet. I don’t have many of those, either. Some sort of bug seems to kill most of the beans I try growing in my front yard. It eats the leaves off the seedlings before they get established. I’ve tried using diatomaceous earth, but it hasn’t helped. Numbers wise, the Kahnawake beans grew the best, the cranberry beans second best, and the skunk beans third best. I planted a couple of other varieties which did not grow. All of these were grown in pots with trellises or corn to climb. #beans #HeritageVegetables #seeds #SeedSaver #PoleBeans #IndigenousFoodSovereignty #gardening #harvest
@Shanmonster They are lovely beans. We have Hidatsa Sheild beans to harvest. The heirloom varieties are wonderful. #Minnesota, #SeedSaver, #SeedSavers.
I just finished shucking the beans from my tiny three sisters garden. These are Kahnawake pole beans. They are gorgeous. I got my first few seeds from a Mohawk seed saver in Six Nations. This is an heirloom Haudenosaunee variety. Hopefully, these will go on to make even more seeds and feed people. #KahnawakeBeans #HeritageVegetables #ThreeSistersGarden #IndigenousFoodSovereignty #Mohawk #SeedSaver #Indigedon #IndigenousMastodon #Beans #PoleBeans #Haudenosaunee
@AngelaPreston A cool and dark place helps. A cardboard divider for 2023 seeds. A cardboard divider for share with friends. Cricket proof container. #SeedSaver, #SeedSaving, #GrowYourOwn.
