I don't know if I would call them student projects, but many of those applications are made for a very specific purpose (like transcribing audio, etc.) very much in the sense of Unix utilities that are designed for one or few tasks. @conjurenation But I will give OpenShot a little credit thought. OpenShot is definitely better than PiTiVi, the GNOME video editor. I cannot use PiTiVi on my system because it will not even launch; at least OpenShot opens and is usable.
