Paracetamol Use During Pregnancy: What the Latest Lancet Evidence Tells Parents

“𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?” For years, this question has worried expectant parents worldwide. Conflicting headlines have fueled anxiety, often without clear answers. A major new review published in The Lancet now brings reassuring, high-quality evidence. By analysing data from 43 studies, researchers found no convincing link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability—when used as recommended. Here’s what parents need to know.

"Evidence suggests that maternal health in pregnancy is associated with autism in the offspring. However, most diagnoses in pregnant women have not been examined, and the role of familial confounding remains unknown. Our cohort included all children born in Denmark between 1998 and 2015 (n = 1,131,899) and their parents.

[…] Our findings indicate pervasive associations between maternal health in pregnancy and offspring autism and underscore that these associations are largely attributable to familial confounding."

Bringing Practice and Science together

If you're interested in theories around #prenatal trauma (during pregnancy) as a source for problems later in life, and how to potentially address them and work with its effects in therapy, Philippe Ployés "The Prenatal Theme in Psychotherapy" contains the most extensive critical literature review that I've come across so far. Available on Libgen.

"bad womb experiences are even worse than bad breast experiences because the chance of any real escape is not there" (Rowan)

"the main theme of Paul’s paper had been that patients who appear to feel imprisoned within a particularly severe, punitive, and hence “penitential” form of superego can sometimes be deemed or even be known to have suffered from particularly severe forms of perinatal trauma"

"strong feelings of guilt, Patient A’s feeling of being “in some kind of self-imposed prison” had also appeared to have had strong connotations of feeling trapped and closed in within the suffocating and persecutory inside of a mother in labour“

FDA Commissioner Flagrantly Misquoted Harvard #PublicHealth Dean at White House Autism Event

The White House claimed that Dr. #AndreaBaccarelli has found a "causal relationship between #prenatal #acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders of #ADHD and #autism spectrum disorder." Not true.

Makary capped off his case against #Tylenol by claiming to be quoting Harvard’s Dr. Andrea Baccarelli. “To quote the dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, ‘There is a causal relationship between prenatal acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders of ADHD and #AutismSpectrumDisorder. We cannot wait any longer,’” said Makary, reading from notes.

That would indeed be quite a firm endorsement from the pinnacle of the scientific establishment, given that a “causal relationship” is much harder to demonstrate than an “association.”

It would be big if it was true.

Feeling the World Anew: Transgenerational Systemic and Prenatal Integrative Art and Body Psychotherapy

"The theory of prenatal psychology establishes an expanded nosology. Psychological and somatic illnesses in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood can increasingly be attributed etiologically to epigenetics and the psychological circumstances of pregnancy.

At the same time, this theory is the basis for a bio-psycho-social medicine of the future, and thus also a new theoretical foundation for comprehensive psychosomatics, in which biological genetics and transgenerational family-systemic psychology/psychotherapy complement each other, as do the epigenetics of pregnancy and prenatal
psychology.

The insight of prenatal-based psychotherapy is the precise possibility of differentiating between transgenerational, prenatal, and postnatal trauma."
