Of course we shouldn’t drill for more oil in the North Sea – we cancelled further exploitation for a reason

We are at a critical point in the climate emergency and already struggling to meet emissions reduction targets. The UK government must hold its nerve, says Bill McGuire, professor emeritus of geophysical and climate hazards

Why Earth’s Poles Could SHIFT in Our Lifetime

The invisible shield that protects all life on Earth is changing. The magnetic north pole has abandoned Canada and is racing toward Siberia at speeds never recorded in human history.

We will be hosting the 10th International #Conference on Rayleigh-Bénard #Turbulence in #Lyon (1-5 June 2026) !
Abstract submissions are now opened.

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers from different fields to explore the latest advancements in high Rayleigh number #convection. A full day will review critical connections between #turbulent #thermal #convection and #geophysical processes.

I do terrestrial #archaeology, but for 24 years I also processed & analyzed offshore #geophysical data like this magnetometer data. I analyzed the data & compared it to known existing infrastructure, figuring out which linear feature is what pipeline, what blob was what well, etc.

I tried to train an assistant two times. In both cases they decided they didn't have the patience to do it.

5g magnetic contour data along a proposed pipeline route in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago displayed as a repeating rainbow palette (left) & as a fuchsia to blue rainbow scheme (right). The repeating colors are better to show complexity, while the single rainbow shows highs & lows. #Archaeology #Geophysical

2 scientific societies will do US climate report as Trump dismisses authors

Two major scientific societies say they will fill the void from the Trump administration’s dismissal of scientists writing a cornerstone federal report on what climate change is doing to the United States. Friday's announcement by the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union aims to produce peer-reviewed research documents assessing the current and future national impacts of climate change. A science-based report required by law is suddenly in question and being reassessed by President Donald Trump’s White House. This week Trump’s Republican administration told scientists working on the National Climate Assessment they were no longer needed.

In a time when science resources are being suppressed or deleted, I'm glad to see this film is still online (if a bit hard to discover - it's not even linked from the page below, you'll have to poke around a bit to find the link to the directory containing the zipped file).

I was honored to meet with Dr. Untersteiner and work with him on this project. I had nothing to do with the silent film footage, but decades after it was filmed he hired me to move forward with his vision of having a narrated version of it.

In addition to helping produce this version of the film, I got to know enough about Dr. Untersteiner personally that I'm sure I would have enjoyed knowing him longer. We did not stay in touch, though, and he passed away a few years later.

(I own no rights to the film, otherwise I might remaster it and find a more convenient place to host it.)

The rivers that science says shouldn't exist

Rivers join downstream, flow downhill, and eventually meet an ocean or terminal lake: These are fundamental rules of how waterways and basins are supposed to work. But rules are made to be broken. In the journal Water Resources Research, Sowby and Siegel lay out nine rivers and lakes in the Americas that defy hydrologic expectations.
