Elections, Travaglio on La7: “De Luca? It’s paradoxical that the only important victory for the center-left is the symbol of the bosses/elites.”
This municipal election is wrongly considered a test for the government. They are tests for the candidates in individual cities. Whoever picks the right candidates, who has governed well, or who has created a very strong system of power wins. That’s what Fatto Quotidiano editor Marco Travaglio comments on Otto e mezzo, on La7, regarding the results of the latest municipal elections, emphasizing how the center-right has confirmed its strength where it has wisely chosen its candidates.
The case of Venice is particularly noteworthy, where outgoing mayor Luigi Brugnaro’s “system” withstood difficulties without any problems. “I don’t really understand – Travaglio observes – how they were hoping the Venice system put in place by Brugnaro could be shaken by the case of the concertmaster, which many of our colleagues became so passionate about. I never understood why the Venetians should reject the center-right because they had appointed Venice to the Phoenix or because there had been a mess between the government and Buttafuoco for the Biennale, which is not only a national but an international case.”
He continues: “They found Venturini, that is, an excellent candidate, then I don’t know how he will be as mayor of Venice, but he’s a 38-year-old former civic scout who served as an assessor with Brugnaro and was infinitely more appealing than the Pd candidate.”
On the other side, the center-left presented Andrea Martella, a long-standing parliamentarian, defined by Travaglio as “a lovely person” but with limited appeal compared to the opponent’s fresh profile. The Fatto editor spares no criticism of the Pd, ironically highlighting the paradox of the center-left’s most significant victory: that of Vincenzo De Luca in Salerno.
“We’ve seen bosses one after another in these elections – Travaglio observes – and it’s paradoxical that the only important victory of a center-left man is precisely the symbol of the bosses, that is, Vincenzo De Luca, who takes back Salerno for the fifth time: mayor for five terms and regional president for two.”
The editor denounces the absence of a law on leadership renewal: “Tell me if it’s possible that in 2026 there isn’t yet a law that mandates renewal and breaks certain clientelistic relationships in the cities. But it is legitimate and therefore he returns for the fifth time to be mayor in a city devastated by 60 skyscrapers that looks like Manhattan, but more ugly. However, this is the verdict of the citizens.”

De Luca is a thorn in Elly’s side, mayor of Salerno for the fifth time.
Vincenzo De Luca’s victory in Salerno was anticipated. The former regional council president had won the mayoral office for the fifth time in the first round with a crushing lead over other candidates, approaching 60%. Franco Massimo Lanocita (M5S-Avs) was a distant second, with Gherardo Maria Marenghi, the center-right candidate, in third place, both with percentages exceeding 10%.
It was a victory entirely for De Luca and not certainly attributable to the broad coalition.
De Luca led a coalition of 7 lists, five civic and two party lists (Psi and Davvero). The symbol of the Pd was not in the field. M5S and Avs supported Lanocita's candidacy, a lawyer who could count on the support of three lists. Nothing was to be done for the center-right, which after the convulsions that preceded the presentation of the lists had managed to regroup at the last minute around Marenghi, a university professor who could count on the support of Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, Lega and Noi Moderati.
Other candidates in the race
Three lists supported Armando Zambrano, former national president of the Engineers Order, who, after Forza Italia’s “turnaround” — the Azzeri initially had guaranteed him support — was the expression of the moderate area. Dimensioni Bandecchi, with Domenico “Mimmo” Ventura, and Potere al Popolo!, with Pio Antonio De Felice were also present. Elisabetta Barone, with Semplice Salerno, and Alessandro Turchi, with Salerno Migliore, were also in the field.
“Vincenzo De Luca is a great administrator,” commented the president of the Pd, Stefano Bonaccini, on the spot. “I had him as a colleague for many years, Vincenzo De Luca is a good, respected person. The Crisafulli case in Enna
But there’s also someone else on the left who won without the Pd. It’s Vladimiro Crisafulli, a historic leader of Pci, Pds, Ds and Pd, formerly a national and regional parliamentarian. Since yesterday he is the new mayor of Enna, with a consensus that travels at 60%. His self-candidacy was not well received by the progressive parties, who would have preferred to converge on a new face.
On the decision of the national leadership, the Pd did not grant Crisafulli the use of the symbol and the M5S chose not to present its own list or give orders from the sidelines to militants. “No, he did well, so we got all these votes.
