Vote in Venice, accusations cross each other in the center-left: tensions between Pd and M5s

A wave of heat is also hitting the center-left. However, this time the African anticyclone is not involved. The overheating of the climate is due to the defeat in Venice. The reformist Democrats say they are not surprised, given that they consider the party led by Conte “a right-wing party.” As proof, the minority within the Pd issues the first statements from Conte regarding the need for the coalition to focus more on security as an issue close to citizens’ hearts, and also to manage migrant flows differently.

The center-left majority throws water on the fire. It is difficult, if not impossible, to deduce from the referendum data or the European elections two years ago that the Venetian Five Stars voted for Venturini. More than that: it is the “narrative” of those who want to convey the idea that if allies with the Democratic Party, the Five Stars will have difficulty. An idea fueled by those who, even within the party led by Giuseppe Conte, feel discomfort with the embrace with the Nazareno.

But the criticism is not one-sided. “In Venice, without taking anything away from Martella, perhaps we made a mistake choosing the candidate,” attacks the rossoverde Angelo Bonelli: “Venturini, through his civic list, which took over 30% of the votes, was able to speak to the citizens,” he adds. Words that shock the Democrats.

The Pd says that it is always in double figures, 25 percent is an excellent result, and the problem is the other parties. And the gaze turns to the smartphone screen and the data from the Ministry of the Interior, which show Avs at 5.18 percent, M5s at 2.61 percent, and the list that unites Psi, +Europe, Italia Viva and Radicals at 1.36 percent. In addition to claiming the candidacy of Martella as that of a “long-standing, rigorous, and passionate manager,” among the parliamentary Democrats they ask where the alternatives were.

Movement parliamentary sources note that, in any case, the gap between Venturini and Martella is such that, regardless of the shift of votes, it is difficult to attribute it to the Five Stars. “It’s ugly to unload the barrel on the candidate, but it’s just as ugly to take it out on an ally,” it was added.

The management of security and the committees for the alternative
An climate that risks overheating to critical levels. For this reason, appeals continue to work with determination on drafting the program and building a true coalition. According to Bonelli, the work will not be completed before next autumn, but to respect the timing, it must be launched immediately.

On the need to put forward a project with a clear program, Giuseppe Conte also expressed himself, shortly after the results in Venice, explaining that “if municipal elections teach us one thing, it is that we must be close to citizens’ needs. Security, for example, which is neither right nor left, and the government’s results are disastrous. We must work on this need of citizens, manage the immigration problem, which requires concrete answers and not ideological ones.”

A need, that of working on a program and coalition, is also felt in the Pd by those, such as Andrea Orlando, who asks for the creation of “committees for the alternative” that work on a real coalition based on three or four strong proposals and, in this way, intercept the vote of those who voted No in the referendum.

This municipal election is wrongly considered a test for the government. They are tests for the candidates in individual cities. Whoever picks the right candidates, who has governed well, or who has created a very strong system of power wins. That’s what Fatto Quotidiano editor Marco Travaglio comments on Otto e mezzo, on La7, regarding the results of the latest municipal elections, emphasizing how the center-right has confirmed its strength where it has wisely chosen its candidates.

The case of Venice is particularly noteworthy, where outgoing mayor Luigi Brugnaro’s “system” withstood difficulties without any problems. “I don’t really understand – Travaglio observes – how they were hoping the Venice system put in place by Brugnaro could be shaken by the case of the concertmaster, which many of our colleagues became so passionate about. I never understood why the Venetians should reject the center-right because they had appointed Venice to the Phoenix or because there had been a mess between the government and Buttafuoco for the Biennale, which is not only a national but an international case.”

He continues: “They found Venturini, that is, an excellent candidate, then I don’t know how he will be as mayor of Venice, but he’s a 38-year-old former civic scout who served as an assessor with Brugnaro and was infinitely more appealing than the Pd candidate.”

On the other side, the center-left presented Andrea Martella, a long-standing parliamentarian, defined by Travaglio as “a lovely person” but with limited appeal compared to the opponent’s fresh profile. The Fatto editor spares no criticism of the Pd, ironically highlighting the paradox of the center-left’s most significant victory: that of Vincenzo De Luca in Salerno.

“We’ve seen bosses one after another in these elections – Travaglio observes – and it’s paradoxical that the only important victory of a center-left man is precisely the symbol of the bosses, that is, Vincenzo De Luca, who takes back Salerno for the fifth time: mayor for five terms and regional president for two.”

The editor denounces the absence of a law on leadership renewal: “Tell me if it’s possible that in 2026 there isn’t yet a law that mandates renewal and breaks certain clientelistic relationships in the cities. But it is legitimate and therefore he returns for the fifth time to be mayor in a city devastated by 60 skyscrapers that looks like Manhattan, but more ugly. Un trionfo annunciato quello di Vincenzo De Luca a Salerno. L’ex presidente della giunta regionale ha conquistato per la quinta volta la carica di sindaco della città al primo turno con uno stacco schiacciante sugli altri aspiranti: vicino al 60%. A grande distanza i principali due sfidanti, con Franco Massimo Lanocita (M5S-Avs) accreditato del terzo posto mentre il candidato del centrodestra Gherardo Maria Marenghi sarebbe secondo, entrambi con percentuali oltre il 10%. Una vittoria tutta di De Luca e non sicuramente da addebitare al campo largo.
De Luca spina nel fianco per Elly, sindaco di Salerno per la quinta volta
De Luca guidava una coalizione formata da 7 liste, cinque civiche e due di partito (Psi e Davvero). In campo non c’era il simbolo del Pd. Il M5S e Avs, invece, hanno sostenuto la candidatura di Lanocita, avvocato che ha potuto contare sul sostegno di tre liste. Nulla da fare per il centrodestra che, dopo le fibrillazioni che hanno preceduto la presentazione delle liste, era riuscito a ricompattarsi in extremis attorno a Marenghi, docente universitario che ha potuto contare sul sostegno di Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, Lega e Noi Moderati.
Gli altri sfidanti in corsa
Tre liste sostenevano Armando Zambrano, già presidente nazionale dell’Ordine degli Ingegneri che, dopo la “giravolta” di Forza Italia — gli azzurri inizialmente gli avevano garantito il sostegno — è stato espressione dell’area moderata. Presenti anche Dimensione Bandecchi, con Domenico “Mimmo” Ventura, e Potere al Popolo!, con Pio Antonio De Felice. In campo anche Elisabetta Barone, con Semplice Salerno, e Alessandro Turchi, con Salerno Migliore.
Vincenzo De Luca è “un grande amministratore”, ha commentato a caldo il presidente del Pd, Stefano Bonaccini. “L’ho avuto come collega per tanti anni, Vincenzo De Luca è uno bravo, stimato. Grande amministratore”. Poi ha aggiunto: “Ha modi che sono quelli che conoscete, ma se ti votano i cittadini della tua comunità o sbagliano tutti oppure vuol dire che percepiscono che sei un grande amministratore”.
Il caso Crisafulli a Enna
Ma c’è anche qualcun altro a sinistra che ha vinto senza il Pd. Si tratta di Vladimiro Crisafulli, storico dirigente di Pci, Pds, Ds e Pd, in passato parlamentare nazionale e regionale. Da ieri è il nuovo sindaco di Enna, con un consenso che viaggia sul 60%. La sua autocandidatura non è stata ben accolta dai partiti del campo progressista, che avrebbero preferito convergere su un volto nuovo.
Su decisione della segreteria nazionale, il Pd non ha concesso a Crisafulli l’uso del simbolo e il M5S ha scelto di non presentare una propria lista né dare ordini di scuderia ai militanti. “No, ha fatto bene, così abbiamo preso tutti questi voti. Perfetto, è andata benissimo”, ha risposto Crisafulli a chi gli chiedeva se il Pd avesse sbagliato a negargli il simbolo. Dopo la decisione del Nazareno, aveva replicato: “A Enna il Pd sono io”.
