My latest #Wikipedia biography, someone I got interested in while researching my previous article about the 1951 mass arrests. Tan Po Goan (1911-85) was a Chinese Indonesian lawyer and Socialist Party politician, and probably the first Chinese minister appointed in the Indonesian government. He was a fierce advocate of the rule of law and the rights of Chinese Indonesians during the 1940s-50s.

Tan Po Goan - Wikipedia

The second half of this episode (starting 25 minutes in) is a good overview of how the Chinese state tracks and harasses Chinese students on Canadian campuses if they are public supporters of democratic reform or critical of PRC policy. Nothing new but a good overview.

What a quip about a bathtub tells us about Canadian politics right now | The House with Catherine Cullen | Live Radio | CBC Listen

Heckling’s pretty common during House of Commons debates. But with tensions running high as the Liberals fight to keep the government afloat, one stray quip can set off a barrage of accusations and criticism. The House sits down with two Hill watchers to discuss Conservative MP Garnett Genuis’ allegedly homophobic comment and what it tells us about civility in Parliament. Then, as the Middle East remains on the brink of all-out war, Canada’s national defence minister tells The House how the government has been preparing over the summer to possibly evacuate tens of thousands of people with Canadian connections stuck in Lebanon. Plus — Chinese dissidents living in Canada share their stories of alleged harassment and intimidation by Beijing. Canada’s former ambassador to China listens in and tells us what steps should be taken to protect free speech and assembly rights for all students across Canadian campuses. This episode features the voices of:  Shannon Proudfoot, writer for The Globe and Mail’s Ottawa bureauPaul Wells, author and podcasterBill Blair, Minister of National DefenceCraig Desson, CBC NewsGuy Saint-Jacques, former Canadian ambassador to China

Forgot to upload the #bilingual post op care info sheet from Wednesday's final #dental extractions.

I was given slightly different verbal instructions from my dentist before leaving the office. Had to do 1 gentle saltwater swishy rinse, immediately after coming home - just to stop the excessive bleeding. It didn't affect my gums forming good bloodclots, which is an essential part of healing up.

My #dentist is #Chinese. The office is a team of 3 brothers. They're all getting old now. My dentist & his older brother will be retiring in 2-3 years. The youngest dentist brother will also retire shortly after & office will be closed after several decades, at same location.

All info sheets they give to their patients have #ChineseTranslations, with the English instructions. This is because many of their older & also some newer to Canada #ChinesePatients are illiterate in English.

This entry in the #TinnedFishDiary is about a product from China!

The #ChineseDiaspora will recognize this elongate oval tin. I grew up enjoying fried dace and black beans served over rice right from the 79Ā¢ tin. šŸ˜‚

I tried it a fancier way w/ veg, inspired by this IG post : https://www.instagram.com/reel/C34lJzzvKCc/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I used the "spicy" tin today, but I also love the original Fried Dace with Salted Black Beans.

The fish has a slightly hard, dry-ish texture. The salty black beans are plentiful.

šŸ“œ The Chinese diaspora ā€˜needs to rise up’ about atrocities against Uyghurs — Q&A with human rights lawyer Rayhan Asat
Politics & Current Affairs

Rayhan Asat comments on China’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Muslim world’s silence on ongoing rights abuses against Uyghurs in China, and the responsibility of the Chinese diaspora in advocating for human rights.

怌Rayhan Asat is one of the most vocal advocates today for the Uyghur people, her people, whose homeland in northwestern China is the scene of the Communist Party’s ongoing commission of what the United Nations says may be ā€œcrimes against humanity,ā€ and what U.S. President Joseph Biden called a ā€œgenocide.ā€ Among the roughly 1 million Turkic peoples detained, imprisoned, and forced into labor there — most of them Muslims — is Asat’s younger brother. Ekpar Asat was picked up by Chinese authorities and sentenced to 15 years in prison after returning from an educational exchange program in the U.S. sponsored by the Department of State. Speaking from London, Asat called for stronger human rights allies and reflected on the news of the growing conflict in the Middle East and the hypocrisy she sees in China and among global activists who are unwilling to confront China.

This is an edited transcript of our conversation.怍

怌In any sort of crisis, historically, it ends with the people rising up against the totalitarian government. But I just don’t see how Chinese people would. Chinese people wouldn’t do that out of fear, ignorance and lack of solidarity. They wouldn’t. There is less sense of civic duty.怍

The China Project

Have decided to read "Yellowface" by Rebecca K. Kuang. There seems to be quite a bit of controversy about it. Will be interesting to see why... I'm just looking to continue my journey of literature about the Chinese diaspora.

I hope to be able to turn it into a teachable topic at some point. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears 😃

Equally, when I was reporting out this piece, there were interviewees who claimed I couldn't understand the issue I was writing about as a non-Chinese Singaporean and asked if I, in fact, had Chinese friends. Good reporting comes independent of identity, led by facts & analysis
