A combination romance novel, family saga, commentary on politics and on growing old, and exploration of a shameful part of the past that I can only hope is not replicated anywhere in the U.S. today. Josiah Bounderby, "the Bully of humility” in Charles Dickens's "Hard Times" (1854)

In Charles Dickens's "Hard Times" (1854), the banker Josiah Bounderby is dubbed "the Bully of humility" (the phraseseems to permeate the book but only comes up three times). I had always read this as referring to how Bounderby bullies others with his humble origins, and in a discussion on the

What makes you think you can handle this?” “Fight for her? I’d kill for her!” The words come out in an angry burst, but I realize I meant every word. I’d kill for Poppy. […]

Tag – Part III The Body – Chapter 12 – Joseph Carrabis – Stories that Heal

@RnDanger

Pretty common brain rot in USA to think that #FoxNews problem and Addiction to #Fiction storytelling on social media and television is about Republican vs. Democrats.

The problem is the speed of information. Fox News, Mastodon, Bluesky, Reddit.

People choose fiction when they blow their minds on dumb-shit high-speed memes. #RescueDonaldTrump

“Today, reports of the day’s events are conveyed to the viewing public by way of alternate universes, The Fox News cable channel conveys its version of reality, while at the other end of the ideological spectrum MSNBC presents its version. They and their many counterparts on radio are more the result of an economic dynamic than a political one. Dispatching journalists into the field to gather information costs money; hiring a glib bloviator is relatively cheap, and inviting opinionated guests to vent on the air is entirely cost-free. It wouldn’t work if it weren’t popular, and audiences, it turns out, are endlessly absorbed by hearing amplified echoes of their own biases. It’s divisive and damaging to the healthy functioning of our political system, but it’s also indisputably inexpensive and, therefore, good business.” ― Ted Koppel. Seduced By My Stepdad: Snowed In & Falling Hard For This Age Gap Romance By C.J. Riggs

Seduced by my Stepdad by C.J. Riggs 18+ Contains Adult Content Seduced by My Stepdad is an age gap romance novella from the amazing C.J. Riggs. I have spoken about Riggs many times before on my blog, so it is no lie that I love this woman and her work. Riggs is known for her erotic horrors depicting feminine rage. This book is completely different. Dare I say this is cute? This is 100% a romance, which follows Robyn and Jack. Jack is married to Robyn's mother, not for much longer, but he is still married to her. Robyn comes to stay with her mother, whom she rarely sees and doesn't have much of a relationship with, only to find her mother has once again forgotten about her. She ends up staying with Jack since there is a bad storm, which results in them being snowed in. Jack is drawn to Robyn and vice versa, but they are determined not to give in to the pull. Until they do, but only until the snow thaws, then they go their separate ways...right? “A bit of snow?” I snort. “I don’t want to be stuck here with you for the next… however many days.” “That’s unfortunate for the both of us, then.” He steps closer to me. “Because you’re not going anywhere, little bird.” […]

Today in Labor History March 30, 1856: The Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Crimean War, between Russia and the victorious Ottoman Empire (allied with the UK, France and Sardinia-Piedmont). The flashpoint was a conflict over the rights of Christian minorities in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, and control of its holy sites.

The Crimean War was one of the first to utilize modern armaments, like explosive shells, railways and telegraphs. Much of these armaments came from Alfred Nobel’s family armament factory. It was also a particularly deadly war. Around 670,000 soldiers died in only four years, the majority from preventable infectious diseases (e.g., typhus, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery), not from battle wounds. Mortality rates for soldiers were 23-31%, compared with U.S. troop mortality rates of only 2% during the Vietnam War.

In the aftermath of the Crimean War, Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. out of fear that the UK would simply take it from them in their weakened military state. The last living veteran of the Crimean war was a Greek tortoise, named Timothy, who had served as a ship’s mascot during the war. He died in 2004, nearly 150 years after the war ended. Despite their victory, the Ottomans gained no new territory, and the war nearly bankrupted them, contributing to their decline as a super power. The Crimean War also helped forge the alliances and grievances that would lead to the First World War, and quite likely to the conditions leading up to Russia’s recent annexation of Crimea and its current fight with Ukraine.

Florence Nightengale became famous as a nurse during this war. Tolstoy fought in the 11-month Siege of Sevastopol. His experiences in this war contributed to his pacifism and anarchism. After witnessing a public execution in France, one year after the Crimean War ended, he wrote, “The truth is that the State is a conspiracy designed not only to exploit, but above all to corrupt its citizens ... Henceforth, I shall never serve any government anywhere.” The war also influenced his novel, “War and Peace.”
