Iran, Schlein: “Italians don’t want to pay for Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal wars.”

I appreciated the Prime Minister Meloni’s openness to our proposal on mobile excise duties that we presented, but the days are running out and meanwhile Italians continue to pay. Italians don’t want to pay for Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal wars. That was said by Elly Schlein, Secretary of the PD, speaking on the sidelines of an initiative for No to the referendum in Bologna. “This illegal war must stop as soon as possible – she added – its economic consequences are already dramatically weighing on our country. The brutal regime of Tehran must stop its attacks and its reprisals, but we demand that the government also asks Trump and Netanyahu to stop these attacks. An immediate ceasefire is needed. We ask the government to exclude, as of now, that if Trump requested support for military attacks against Iran, authorization to use the bases, because it would be in clear contrast with Article 11 of our Constitution.”

Peace is found only with the exercise of dialogue.

We are very close to the suffering that Cardinal Pizzaballa sees and lives in Palestine. I am very pleased with today’s meeting: Pope Francis reminded us that the wars we live through are pieces of a world war, we must never forget it. The meeting today deserves credit for being transversal and for asking for the contribution of everyone. We must be close to so many conflict zones, to those who suffer in war: Pope Francis warned us against falling into the globalization of indifference and Pope Leone reminds us to avoid the globalization of helplessness.

Commitment to peace involves us all. Peace is not a distant utopia, but the only thing that can save the world. When writing Article 11 of the Constitution, the founding fathers had the horrors of Monte Sole in their eyes, and now we must think of the victims of war. We must relaunch the human family, that of which we only remembered during the Covid period before forgetting it again. Starting with a region like ours, we must work to promote dialogue and international activities in a multinational perspective: this is a great challenge in which Italy and Europe must have an important role to avoid only the logic of force prevailing. This is something we owe to that generation that, dying in World War II, from 1945 onwards, gave us 80 years of peace. Let us remember De Gasperi who defended the idea of homeland, but condemned nationalism that kills the homeland.

Unfortunately it’s true: the international community has done little or nothing. Peace is found only with the exercise of dialogue. When I speak with Ukrainians and Russians who ask me how they will be able to dialogue after the war, I remind them that 80 years ago it seemed impossible for Germany and the rest of Europe to return to dialogue, and yet it was achieved. We must listen to the will of all in order to build a lasting peace, even if there are so many mistrusts and political, cultural and spiritual resistances because war creates a great deal of misunderstanding. Dialogue is the only weapon we have, the only one capable of resolving resistances: this is especially true in the case of Russia and Ukraine. The first step of dialogue is humanitarian to create trust: exchange of prisoners, return of children, searching for the missing.

It has just occurred to me - rather late - that the real point of the mass arrests of #DefendOurJuries protestors against the proscription of #PlasticineAction was to demonstrate to organisers of mass civil disobedience protests that the Met *can* arrest that many.

Up to know, organisers have assumed that if 500 engage in disobedience, arrest is impractical. The number has just gone up, making effective #CivilDisobedience harder and riskier.
