"Founded by Louise Erdrich in 2001, Birchbark is based in Minneapolis and has a mission tied closely to the author’s Ojibwe background (she’s an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians). Her store specializes in Indigenous literature and bills itself as a meeting point for “literate Indigenous people who have survived over half a millennium on this continent.” Birchbark even served as a muse for Erdrich’s 2021 novel, “The Sentence,” narrated by a bookstore employee whose boss just happens to be a woman named Louise."

Ann Patchett opened Parnassus Books in 2011 when physical bookstores seemed endangered. Now, author-owned bookstores are thriving across the U.S. Judy Blume runs Books & Books in Key West, Florida, where she often helps customers herself. Louise Erdrich’s Birchbark Books in Minnesota focuses on Indigenous literature. Lauren Groff’s The Lynx Books in Gainesville, Florida, emphasizes banned books. Jeff Kinney’s An Unlikely Story in Massachusetts is a massive literary hub. George R.R. Martin’s Beastly Books in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a haven for speculative fiction. Emma Straub’s Books Are Magic in New York has become a local favorite.
@jcrabapple Friends of mine, a writer couple with five kids, bought a bookstore in Lancaster, PA a few years ago and it’s become a genuine success story, even expanded to a second floor this year. It’s a real community center. Lots of events. Always lots of people. They really do it the right way.

In Fargo, ND there is a jam packed used bookstore called BDS Books where I can wander for days. Lots of weird stuff. I picked up a high school year book, and page after page was annotated by a teacher, with notes about her students. She followed their lives. On this page with a picture of a basketball team, she wrote "These boys were in a car accident in Jamestown, ND, Aug-1961." The 19 year old apparently lost his life, the 20 year old his left arm. Page after page of these notes about students she taught. They were important to her. I should have bought it, but I now I dont think I could ever find it again in that cavernous place.

It’s been nearly five years in the making, and now it’s almost here! The Trees of My Country: A Natural History of India in 50 Trees, published by Aleph, will hit the bookstores soon.
It took me across India, this great country of the trees, from the steamy forests of the Andaman and Nicobar islands to the high Himalaya, from the coral atolls of Lakshadweep to the far reaches of Arunachal […]
