Magnificent Humanitas: What is the subject of Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical?
Power must be shared. And technology makes this possible more than ever, or renders it impossible. This is the message of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas.” The text, in line with the Social Doctrine, denounces the excessive distortions that prevent billions of people from living a life worthy of their dignity. But it is a document that offers a positive vision, full of hope. Another path is possible, if we want AI to make us wiser, more competent, more human, and more sensitive to others. Provided we know well what the risks are if we passively accept digital dominance.
The text unfolds through an introduction (paragraphs 1-16), five chapters: “A dynamic thought faithful to the Gospel,” paragraphs 17-45; “Foundations and principles of the Church’s Social Doctrine,” paragraphs 46-89; “Technology and domination. The greatness of the human person before the promises of AI,” paragraphs 90-130; “Preserving the human in transformation. Truth, work, freedom,” paragraphs 131-181; “The culture of power and the civilization of love,” paragraphs 182-228; and a conclusion, paragraphs 229-245. In the Encyclical, the speech of Pope Francis to the G7 on AI in 2024, which is also important, is cited only once in paragraph 83. There are no references to the Rome Call for AI Ethics of 2020, promoted by the Pontifical Academy for Life, which is the first and so far only Vatican document dedicated to outlining concrete aspects for an ethical vision applied to algorithms. In that occasion the term “algoretica” was coined, now common usage (and in the new words of the Accademia della Crusca) and is also missing from the Encyclical.
