The Development Gap: Taskforce for Sustainability, empowering rural women and girls.
"Water: “Water #heating accounts for about 18% of your home's #energy use and is the typically the second largest energy expense in any home." https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/water-heating #GlobalSouth requires less water heating than the #GlobalNorth. The North leads in global emissions typically. What can we do about this?
Water Heating

Reduce your hot water use and choose an energy efficient water heater to reduce water heating costs.

When we think of "#Development" we think of temperature controlled #housing. 4.1B tonnes co2 come from from heating globally
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/co2-heating-cooling
In fact, about 4 times more CO2 is produced to heat than to cool so the #GlobalSouth #pollutes far less for #HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)
Global carbon emissions from heating and cooling

Measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. Heating includes space and water heating. Emissions from cooling — mostly air conditioning — measure emissions from electricity consumption but do not include refrigerants used in AC units.

Our World in Data

Food: in Southeast Asia and China, only 65% of the population owns a #refrigerator; in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, 80%; and in Latin America, 82% (Electrolux, 2019). https://americanhistory.si.edu/explore/stories/not-just-cool-convenience-how-electric-refrigeration-shaped-cold-chain

If we think of a #developed lifestyle, it often includes consumer appliances like these. Is there another way?

There are many 100s of millions of private vehicles. However, there are 4.5 Billion public #transport users

We need to make life for those 4.5 Billion to be made easier so they do not try to become private vehicle owners!

In 2015, around 947 million passenger #cars and 335 million commercial #vehicles were in operation worldwide.

It is not that we are too numerous (#population) it what we think is necessary for each individual to have. "#Development" needs redefining.
Number of vehicles in use worldwide 2015| Statista

This statistic shows the number of passenger cars and commercial vehicles in use worldwide from 2006 to 2015.

Statista

Did you know: There are around 8 Billion people on the planet and of that number, 91.6% of globe use #electricity. https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS

#Population is not the problem in the fight for the climate. But populations of this size all living "modern" lifestyles IS the problem. As nations "#develop" they tend to become bigger and bigger #consumers. At https://TheDevelopmentGap.org, we question what that word even means.

"Existing Pains in the sustainability field:
#Menstrual Products: Current options are somewhat uncomfortable
#Wheel alternatives: Wheels contain #plastic and end up in the food cycle
#Fuel alternatives: We still run on #fossilfuels due to ease-of-use
#Packaging alternatives: Plastic is still the easy choice
Toilet paper: We still cut down #trees for our #waste" thedevelopmentgap.org #SDG course
