The Honda GB350S
Everyone once every few years something comes along. Something that makes you take a second glance and want to pick it up. It’s not the features, or how it looks. There is something different. It could be a phone, an e-book reader, a computer or even a motorcycle.
This time it was a motorcycle, an offering from Honda that has in some shape or form been doing the rounds in the Asian market. Firstly, in India (as the H’ness) in an attempt to unseat the dominance of Royal Enfield in its own home market, and more recently in Japan. Now it has officially entered the European market, adhering to stricter emission requirements.
Sure it specs aren’t much to should home about, but the experience is something significant. It has a smoother delivery of power and some features that are not found in rivals. Like traction control and LED lighting, that is only making its way to brands such as Royal Enfield that clearly dominate the market even globally.
Compared to the Royal Enfield Hunter (or HNTR in some markets), the experience is smoother and has a more commanding presence with long wheelbase a higher stance. By producing a little more power, and having two counter balance shafts it is also smoother to the point where you must be reminded this is a single cylinder motorcycle.
It does have its limitations, where it is easier to hit the rev limiter in first and second gear, Compared to the Hunter 350 this is more prominent. There are a number of accessories available for this machine to make it yours, including, as pictured a headlight cowl that give it a cafe racer appearance.
Riding it feels more like a smaller, more agile, lighter Royal Enfield Interceptor rather than a mere commuter motorcycle. Although less agile than the Hunter 350 that it competes with, it has its own unique characteristic on top of the Honda name and all it stands for. Some will prefer its approach, its handling that that all important reliability that the big H is known for.
Still, despite having the character it has those modern features from self cancelling signals to traction control.
Certainly, if this machine had your curiosity, it is worth having a test ride.
