I do wish folks would stop using "alligator alcatraz".

It is a concentration camp.

It is not intended as a form of punishment or deterrence for criminals. It is intended as a means of removing humans the government does not like from society.

It's not a joke, it's not a meme, it's not a t-shirt.

It's a concentration camp.

An incomplete list of people excluded from 'international' conferences that are in-person only and aren't streamed or recorded
- People with caring responsibilities
- People with disabilities
- People with health vulnerabilities
- People who don't fly in recognition of climate emergencies
- People who work for orgs with ethical no-fly policies
- People who have their travel disrupted due to climate chaos
- People who only engage with fully open access scholarship (if you have to travel+pay to watch a talk, it's not at all open access, even if a related publication is)
- People who can't leave their country for fear of not being let back in
- People who can't get visas
- Unfunded/underfunded people
- People with unfavourable exchange rates
- People who have limited holidays off work
- People who can't afford it
- etc..

I guess you end up with rooms mostly of academics with travel budgets who are too senior to really do research any more, and research students with stipends. That's fine but the perspectives can feel limited, ungrounded and underinformed.. with a huge environmental cost.

The Dutch know a thing or three about floods and water management. Just think: they learned all they could because saving lives and preventing disasters is the role of government.

“Seventy-two years after Zeeland's catastrophe, the answer to that question will reveal not just America's relationship with water but also its willingness to learn from history and from the hard-won wisdom of places that have faced rising waters and chosen to fight back with everything a government can offer its people.”

Occasionally you find a person who's like "I don't agree with either extreme, I want to exist somewhere in the middle" and for some reason, those are the EXACT people who get really angry when you try to say the same thing about gender

I finally saw a Capybara in real life!

Visited the San Diego Zoo, and of course it was snoozing in the shade, next to his buddy, a Tapir!

Life dream realized!

Today I was reminded that old online chats offered context awareness for the people online: you knew you won't be a bother to a friend who has a smiley flower as a status; and you knew you might not be getting a quick reply from someone who's Away.

Today I don't even know if my friends are online or not. The messenger apps make the assumption that everyone is online, and if not, they will receive a push notification, and will reply to you as soon as possible. But this assumption is barely true. I bet it makes lives harder, especially for ND people
