It’s a shame to see Sci-Hub falling for web3 hype and adding a pumpfun memecoin ticker to their webpage. Blockchain-based DNS does not automatically mean “decentralized”, and 3DNS — the company behind .box — is based in the US and would be subject to US court orders.

Someone unaffiliated with Sci-Hub created the memecoin, claiming to be fundraising, but said only 20% of proceeds would go to Sci-Hub. Founder Alexandra Elbakyan herself condemned this.

@jgayfer It also depends on your personality.

I have seen careful and pedantic coders build impressive things with python and js while I tend to make a mess that's impossible to maintain. I also waste many hours debugging.

So for me, a strictly typed language leads to long term productivity. I also take on bigger problems with confidence.

@mikeTesteLinux mine is probably a calibration issue. I'm not able to fix it though.

I was able to use my laptop for around 3h at 0% battery. Even though my system kept throwing tantrums that it will turn off anytime

The need to control things is a natural response to living in a stressful and anxiety provoking society. Who doesn't want more (any) control - over our own health, wellbeing, relationships, let alone the madness of politics.

But deep down this desire for control comes from the belief that we are separate, flawed individuals; when in reality, we are all connected and already whole.

When we try to control things, we create stress and struggle. But life really does have its own rhythm, and when we trust that rhythm - that flow, we find peace.

Our job is to do our best, but the results are not ever in our hands.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up—it means recognising that we were never really in control to begin with.

@zstg @mboelen Zen browser is not available for mobile afaik. 🤔

The screenshot you attached looks like it was taken on a macbook and cropped near the sidebar of zen browser.

@largess That's true. I just meant it as self reflection. Something you ask yourself and learn :)

I do agree that people lie to look good to others and to themselves. Even if they want to do something in a real life situation they might end up doing something else. Somebody might think "I am not afraid of tigers". But if a tiger shows up how they react is usually very different. It's a form of ignorance about themselves.

@kskarthik Just a few more days then 🙂

@SteveThompson I feel AI will do what #cars did to #fitness. Walking is considered an exercise. Most people are not fit except a few "fitness enthusiasts" who pay a gym to run around and carry heavy things.

Thanks to #AI, thinking will become an #exercise too. It would be unnecessary and difficult. Most people might become dumb as nails except a few "mental athletes" who can still write proper sentences, do math and think critically.

@kskarthik
I was waiting for #cosmic to release a stable version but it is already fantastic. I'm really impressed by how beautiful and snappy it is turning out.

Kudos to the developers who for achieving so much in such a short time. 👏🏾👏🏾

Turns out the battery was just wrongly calibrated. It spent a solid 3-4 hours at 0% battery before turning off 😂

I am going to let it drain to 0% overnight on the bios screen and charge it to full. That should fix it once and for all.

I guess things changed bc there is now a crypto ticker showing the memecoin price on the Sci-Hub front page, and the donations page also prominently lists it.

Sci-Hub has long fundraised by accepting donations of major cryptocurrencies, which makes sense. But the memecoin seems like a terrible idea, and it’s not clear what they’re even trying to do with the web3 domain.

@molly0xfff oh they have a scamcoin LOL? idk how is this more normalized than ads nowadays, people go ewww over websites with ads but scamcoins are fine
@molly0xfff really weird, if I just opened this page I'd have thought it was compromised/hacked... I'm totally unaware of the current ownership and management structure of sci-hub but it's a really worrying development if it's not somehow rolled back
@molly0xfff Elbakyan herself said they got a couple of million USD in a memecoin set up by a group of Chinese supporters, and was hoping the rate would grow to transform more of these memecoins into bitcoins. She mentioned it would be promoted, so this is probably what we're seeing https://t.me/freescience/255
Sci-Hub

@giocomai thanks for the context. Glad they got some up front $ out of it at least 😐

@molly0xfff It shouldn't surprise when the site itself is based on piracy.

There's an argument to be made the US-government funded research should not be copyrighted, and the University of California has argued this successfully against publishers.

@RationalWiki @molly0xfff why only US-government funded?
@jimbob @RationalWiki @molly0xfff Because it was paid for by taxpayers, and because US government publications are never copyrighted.
@Bongolian @RationalWiki @molly0xfff why single out of the US government, I mean - many governments have similar policies regarding research they fund being open access, and research funded by all governments is ultimately funded by tax payers
@RationalWiki that’s overly reductive, I think
@molly0xfff promotion for crypto crap on a blockchain based toy domain is expectable. For me it's not just the real scihub, but a memecoin project bt a cryotobro stealing the scihub project.
@molly0xfff Nice!! Can’t wait to listen

@molly0xfff That bit about subject to US court orders needs to be more broadly understood. There are no services out there that aren't subject to their national laws, likely including the laws of countries they do business in. Even the ones that supposedly retain no info on their customers would still have to comply to an order telling them to retain such info.

If you want privacy the options are slim or roll your own.

@reflex @molly0xfff this is very much downplaying the roles of jurisdiction (just bc something is a law in one country doesn't mean they can enforce those laws in other countries), & the fact that the political climate of some countries means the degree of privacy & autonomy that can realistically be expected is unclear at best. The US is inthe beginning of one of the most explicit fascist takeovers in its history. Law enforcement abuse will be abundant & unrelenting, so don't host in the US.

@itsmeholland @molly0xfff I'm not certain what your point is, if you do business in a country you must conform with their laws. The options for, say, Proton, are to comply or stop doing business with US clients. This has been used to go after the Crypto companies (deservedly) and many others.

This is also used against US companies operating in Europe, as seen by the various GDPR rulings.

@molly0xfff

This is officially the worst timeline.

@molly0xfff the web3 DNS hype is especially funny because actual DNS is actually kind of decentralized, if you leave out the root servers, they are a bit of a different story and are not blindly using cloudflare

@famfo @molly0xfff they’ve switched from “speed running the financial regulatory system” to “speed running the network stack”

The reason we have DNS is because a highly centralized set of dns records is not scalable or performant enough for the modern internet. We know. We tried it.

Now imagine when every lookup has to query the blockchain to determine if the record is valid 😂

@famfo @molly0xfff i mean eh? dns is centralized in practice but since ICANN only care about the money are completely politically neutral, it’s really not a big deal
@famfo @molly0xfff also if you really want decentralized and anonymous DNS and HTTP we have a tool for it, it’s called Tor. There really really is no need for decentralized DNS unless you want to make a quick buck
@molly0xfff Damn, also the reaction of that cryptobro is so telling.
@molly0xfff Yeah, "We're doing you a favor by co-opting the brand you've carefully cultivated to make bank."
@molly0xfff If I had a dollar for every new "webX" hype ... 🧐
@molly0xfff "No you don't get it, we're supporting you by rug pulling your supporters and giving you a small fraction of the proceeds. See, we are the heroes here." 🤦🏽‍♂️
@molly0xfff there’s so much coiner energy in correctly being called a scam by the person whose project they’re supposedly fundraising for and going “no you’re just confused” and doing anything to avoid talking about how they’re using the project’s name but only donating a tiny amount of the profit to the project itself
@molly0xfff "Meme tokens are a fun way to show community support" sounds a whole lot like a recycled "NFTs are a fun way to show support for your favorite artists" argument. We all know how well that turned out.
@molly0xfff Actually it's pretty funny that non-fungible tokens fell flat so the new hotness is... fungible tokens.
@molly0xfff Is it just me, or does it seem odd that the new "block-chain based" .box domain doesn't have the crypto marquee add across the top, but the old domains do? WTF is going on?
@molly0xfff I just realized I have no idea what this web3 thing is!? and I'm a crypto engineer (real crypto, you know, signing and encryption and hashing and stuff)
@Bredroll @molly0xfff it's a catchall term for a decentralized blockchain- and token-based internet. it's not well-defined and mostly serves as a buzzword to make investors believe it would be the Next Big Internet Thing
