call me crazy but search engine indexing already exists, is already permitted by mastodon, and is already opt-out. this is how search indexing on the internet has worked for decades. robots.txt has existed as a standard since 1994. if you don't want your toots indexed, use the features in your software to disable indexing. this isn't an assault on your rights. it's legitimate fair use for the purpose of providing a public service. fediverse search is inevitable and necessary for platform growth.
