The Pineridge Bluegrass Folklore Society in Oshawa, Ontario, is holding it's next meeting and picking session on Sunday, December 7. For $4, attendees can listen to up to four hours of live bluegrass music - some professional, some amateur. Or, join the slow jam for beginners, or take part in the jam circles with other musicians.

A traditional Shetland fiddle tune that I like, "Willafjord", has an unusual rhythm, so I composed a tune called "Longworth Bridge" to go with it, and my friend Ron helped me record it:

#3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings for Thursday

A #mandolin class that got me thinking about why arrangements are the way they are, and why it might be better for me to try to come up with my own for my favorite songs -- for playability, and for the learning-by-doing;

A good haircut;

French fries for dinner.

(This is an occasional reminder that "good things" don't have to be "good for me things".)

"The Entertainer" is a 1902 #classicPianoRag written by #ScottJoplin. It was sold first as sheet music by #JohnStarkAndSon of #SaintLouisMissouri, and in the 1910s as #pianoRolls that would play on #playerPianos. The first recording was by #blues and #ragtime musicians "the #BlueBoys" in 1928, played on #mandolin and #guitar. As one of the classics of the ragtime genre, it returned to international prominence as part of the style revival in the 1970s.

The Waltz of Two Hearts

I composed this years ago but never recorded it until now. A good chance to use my octave mandolin, which often gathers dust since the mandolin orchestra shut down before the pandemic.

I haven't done #3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings for a while. There have been plenty of good things, mostly involving cats, soup, and tea.

For today:

getting another #mandolin, this one cheap enough that I'm not afraid of hurting it, and getting the bridge set up, the action adjusted, etc. Now I can move on to changing the strings on my "good" one.

giving away clothes that no longer fit;

putting books that rocked my world when I was 9 in a Little Free Library so they might reach a new kid.

Mandolin Cafe Forum Set to Launch Artificial Intelligence Moderation

β€œThe AI moderator, currently in Beta phase, uses advanced natural language processing to detect high-risk conversational triggers such as quotes like, "should I use a capo?," "what pick is best," "which mandolin sounds best for jazz," and "did Bill Monroe invent the G chop chord?" Once detected, the system automatically redirects users to a soothing looping video of Chris Thile playing Bach's "Sonata No. 1 in G minor - I Adagio," followed by a polite message stating: "This topic has been extensively covered since 1998."”
