Fastmail @fastmail has been operating on bare metal for 25 years. Their planning and (over-)provisioning strategy reminds me of Wikimedia.
Situations where cloud renting is cost effective for medium or large companies are vanishingly rare, and always have been. As with so many big tech patterns, this is a myth held up by VC-backed startups and incentives.

This is fun. I like it. It’s not *entirely* true, but it should definitely be the start point. PostgreSQL is great, as is the #postgresql sql syntax, which is becoming the defacto sql ‘style’, including in #duckdb. Also, the page doesn’t mention standardising on one query language, rather than many. Also, Postgres isn’t great for columnar operations which is its weak point.
