Our intro, and question from @streetmeme

Q1. Where are you posting from today?

Can you track stand? For how long? How much easier is it to track stand on a fixie?

(If you ride a cycle with >2 wheels, is there an equivalent?)

#BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter @bikenite

@streetmeme @bikenite A1. Hi, in Oakland, CA as usual.

I went to a wedding once, and the groom gave a short speech thanking his brother, his best man. He talked about how his brother was really good at track standing, and that he never quite got it. I decided later that it'd be a fun New Year's resolution to learn how to track stand.

I started practicing at stop lights / stop signs and I don't know how one is really defined but I can now sort of balance while inching forward ever so slowly.. I wonder if this is annoying to the person behind me, if there is someone behind me? Usually there's not enough bike traffic around here for people to queue up at intersections though. At least when I've been out.

It's definitely easier on a slight slope.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: Posting from San Francisco and I can barely track stand. I've never had a fixie but ride a single speed. Seems it would be easier on a fixie though. #BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. Posting from Beaverton, OR, which has briefly reverted to spring weather after a heat wave.

I don't know what any of those words mean, so I'm going to say "no".

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: Northshore area, north of Seattle, Washington State, Cascadia.

I don't know what track standing is but it looks like balancing without moving? In which case that's not a thing I've ever tried to learn lol.

#BikeNite

@moira @ascentale @streetmeme

It is basically when you come to a stop, but you expect to be rolling in a second, so you try not to put a foot down…

…and I always do. But sometimes I get a second or two.

@moira @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite Clue is in the name: it's easiest on a slope (say, a velodrome track), but any slope will do. Steeper the easier. Bring the bike to a near standstill, pointing *slightly* uphill. If you do nothing it'll roll back a little, but very little pressure on a pedal will make it roll forward. The slope amplifies the balancing effect, you can stay upright using only a few cm of forward/back travel to compensate. Fun skill when you get the hang of it.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite

A1) I'm posting from the Toiyabe National Forest, where it is raining and 61 degrees F.
I've never been able to track stand.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. I have never been able to do a track stand of any variety for more than a split second. I did make a video cutting together a time when I was practicing trying to do a different type of track stand (the one you see mountain bikers doing while drinking a beer at the bottom of the mountain after a long run or what not when they want to look cool!):

https://urbanists.video/w/2VLpf7fuu7pFtu9E5aNFtr

I never really got the hang of it.

@sam @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite ha ha i haven't ever tried that style before!
@genex @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite it was so bad, I never could get it 🙈

A1. I am posting from fabulous #VancouverIsland, indicating all is right in the universe.

A1a. Can I track stand? sigh… no. But I do practice!

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1a) China* A1b) Does that just mean balance on the pedals? #BikeNite *a Chinese buffet counts, right?
@lopta @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite it's easier if you kinda of rock forwards and backwards I've found. But you are balancing on the pedals and with a fixie it's easier to pedal forwards and back which I can't do on my single speed

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. Waterloo, Ontario, Canada 😀🚴‍♀️❤️

And I cannot track stand!

I have never heard of the term track stand, so I don't know if I have ever done it.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite

Q1. Posting from #VancouverIsland and my ride today on #MapleMountain in the #CowichanValley

Q2. I absolutely suck at doing trackstands but I will always try at intersections, stops signs and lights when in urban bike mode.

@ascentale @bikenite posting from the Trans Pride March in #toronto! with my bike!

I can't track stand lol

#BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite Hi Bikenite folks from south central Minnesota. I don’t practice in any way, but if there’s a little bit of uphill at a stop sign or light I’ll try to keep pressure on the pedals. But, it always is foot on the ground pretty quickly. #bikenite
@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Ventura County, California. I used to be able to track stand, when I was in high school. I might be able to do it now, but don't bother. I am perfectly capable of getting on and off of my bike. 🤪
@ai6yr @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite You just made me realize why I don't even consider it.
In this college town, I want you to *know* I'm not an idiot student going to just roll out in front of you. I want you to know 'I'm stopping" or ... at least yielding. This week, several times I did the "take foot off pedal and lean" and not quite put the foot down.... which informed drivers to go, so I didn't have to stop.

@geonz @ai6yr @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite

Conversely that's why I do it. As a sort of signal that I am aware you are there, that I have to wait, I am going to wait, but that it is actually my turn

Passive aggressive trackstand

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: Nagoya, Japan.

When approaching a light, especially when riding with cleats, I'll often lag back to see if I can hit the light. I can "track stand" for a short time, but not remaining perfectly stationary; and I don't push the envelope much, because putting down a foot is easy enough and falling is painful.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite

A1. Waiting out typhoons and earthquakes in Tokyo, Japan. I used to be able to track stand for more than a minute. It's a few handfuls of seconds now, but I won't do it in traffic and that's mostly when the opportunity would arise.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. Hello from Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA! I biked here from neighboring Somerville for the annual Cambridge Dance Party, which takes over the street in front of City Hall for an outdoor dance.

The street (Massachusetts Avenue) is on top of the MBTA Red Line subway. It's also fairly bike-active. There are door-zone bike lanes, frequently used for double parking, lolsob.

My bike is chained to a sign post at a corner protected by a bored cop. Should be fine.

Track stands are weird with my e-bike, but I have never successfully done it on any bike.

Q1. Edmonton/amiskwaciy-wâskahikan, in so-called Canada.

Q2. Never quite learned how to do a "proper" trackstand, of the sort that one can do indefinitely. I've gotten a lot better at a pseudo-trackstand, where one barely inches forward, often while moving left to right to try to keep balance, but it's (apparently) not the same thing.

This technique seems solid, I just suck at practicing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDjo53gbDLo

Master The Track Stand With These Simple Tips

YouTube

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite
A1 #BikeNite Today, from the west coast of FL. Haven't done much biking this week, on account of Florida roads and weather and errands (might dash out tonight for beer and granola).

I cannot really track stand; my reflexes for wiggling the handlebars at very low forward speed take over and interfere. I still keep trying. I am on a cargo bike, not a fixie. I am nonetheless balanced enough that I can sometimes manage a 6-mile commute w/o foot to ground.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite some of my best attempts:

and yeah, one of my life goals is to confuse a self-driving car.

@dr2chase @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite Snork. I can do that b/c we don't have much traffic so usually the four-way stops are rollalongs and .... I know the light cycles for the7 traffic lights on the way.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite
A1) Posting from rainy Minneapolis. I dont true track-stand (without moving), but if I can move forward 1cm every couple seconds, I can wait through most of a stoplight.

I could also stay up by hopping the front wheel instead of creeping forwards, but it looks silly, is more work and is still not a motionless trackstand.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: Sydney, Australia. The SW part near Campbelltown today.

Can't properly track stand, can sort of do it for a short time. Can balance while stationary for a bit as well, and roll or hop backwards a little. More trials riding than track stand.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1:, Hudson Valley. I can’t quite track stand but I’m getting close. I’ve really enjoyed videos of Glen Gittens recently as he tries to re-create all the cycling tricks he could do 50 years ago. Highly recommend!

Track stand? No way. Nor do I even attempt to take hands of the handlebars ;)
@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite Oh!!!! LOL I forgot about those funny things that attach your shoes to pedals that people have. I was trying to figure out WHY IN THE WORLD so many people would practice a track stand.
@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite #bikenite A1: g'day from Melbourne, Australia. Yeah, I'll try to keep my balance at crossings and so on even though I have flat pedals and a low-ish mtb-ish top tube which means there's absolutely no point, and on a non-fixie on the flat you always end up creeping just a little bit forward every now and then ... just showing off / entertaining myself really :-)

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite

A1. I am posting from Berkeley, CA as usual tonight. I can track stand for short periods of time, say 5-10 seconds before I loose my balance. I have found track standing to be a particularly useful skill for restarting a stalled climb on really steep mtb trails when you are in your lowest gears.

#BikeNite #BikeTooter

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Posting from Minneapolis. I can track stand for about 15 seconds; 30 seconds at best.

Sometimes I see people corking intersections on group rides with a rock-solid track stand. It looks like a fun way to flex on drivers, but also seems to require a fixie.

@ascentale @bikenite Having watched a number of videos about track stands, this is the one I recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnPtVWx5pd0

This video clearly covers coordinating your brake with shifting your weight, which other videos gloss over, or omit entirely.

Can't Trackstand? Here's Why.

YouTube
@ascentale
A1 posting from #naarm AKA Melbourne, Australia.
A2 I can trackstand like a champion. I learned when I was a bike courier in my twenties, I was on my bike all day, had time on my hands and trackstand meant I could take of quicker when I needed.
Nowadays I've started doing trackstands while sitting down on the saddle, which is like the next level of difficulty. If I want to show off I can, in the right circumstances, hang a trackstand while sitting, no hands.
It's easier if you're going slightly uphill, so if you want to learn find somewhere with a slight uphill grade. Low gear also helps.
You can do it downhill, even on a non-fixed-gear bike, by using the brakes and the flex in the wheel and frame to bounce off, but it's quite a bit harder. This could be why I have a long history of breaking frames.

I cannot track stand - but watching the video @streetmeme posted I realize I probably can, I was just doing it wrong :-P That's next ride's project!

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. Northern Virginia as usual. Swamped this week! What is this "track stand" of which you speak? #BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Home in New England, as usual. Can I track stand? I honestly don't know. I used to be able to, but it's been a long time since I needed to do it, so I'm not sure, at my age.

It's obviously much easier to do on a fixie, since you have the ability to apply torque in both directions. And no, without the ability to fall over, there really isn't an equivalent with more wheels, unless they are all inline.

@gcvsa @ascentale @streetmeme

Thank you, I am now imagining 3 and 4 inline wheel bikes as an entertainment, but in the back of my head part of my compute is trying to figure out how to use multiple e-drives for carry-shit-olympics…

#BikeNite A1: Posting from #Burlington, Ontario right now. Probably won't be able to answer more than this question before I have to head bsck to #WaterlooRegion.

Track stand? I can't even ride no-hands! And there was the time I fell over with the bike just trying to dismount. That was the time when I decided I was old.

@ascentale
@streetmeme @bikenite

@bobjonkman @ascentale @streetmeme

Oh, this reminds me of the many times while riding far too exhausted for safety, coasting up to a stoplight or some other thing for which I have to stop, and falling over (or more usually *almost* falling over,) because I was too tired to remember to put a foot down.

@bobjonkman @ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite oh my heavens, I've also fallen over when dismounting. the helmet stays ON until I'm off the bike

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: hi from Denver metro!

I don’t know what track standing is. Trying to balance on the bike without moving forward/backward or putting a foot on the ground?

If so, definitely not on the ebike, because I can’t even ride no handlebars on that, and probably not on the mountain bike because I’ve never tried.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite #bikenite A1, Posting from Carbon County Montana. Can’t really track
Stand but am thinking it would be cool to learn.
@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite a1. From my usual Seattle. I can do a track stand pretty well. Not sure 3+ wheels has such a thing. Maybe if they’re in a row.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1 #bikeNite
Naarm
I think the closest on a trike is holding position up hill with your pressure on the pedals instead of the brakes. Not sure why anyone would bother.

I've never tried to learn to track stand. When stopping at lights/etc I usually enjoy the rest more than wanting to waste energy trying to launch fractionally faster.

@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1: Posting from Seatlte, WA. I don't know how long you have to stay up to be qualified as track standing, but I can do it for about 10 seconds... #BikeNite
@ascentale @streetmeme @bikenite A1. Santaclara, CA. I recall being able to track stand at traffic lights, like 4 decades ago. These days, I don’t even try! On a memorial ride for Alex Pretti, there was a young woman doing fairly well, on a mountain bike, while her brother was being encouraged to knock her over. Kids… #BikeNite
