the pressure from social media worked. In systemd, age verification has finally been reverted and removed for good. Linux is always for privacy conscious users, it isn't just another Microslop SlopOS https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/41179 thanks @reddy_1975 for the heads up!

EDIT: they rejected the PR. So keep fight on! systemd folks are cowards and enabling this mess.

people don't realize this, but this is how they infect a good product and build surveillance network. today it is age verification for OS, tomorrow they will come with sex verification to target LGBQT+ groups or country verification to target minorities or immgirations, etc.

Meta, the evil corp who is behind this, wants everything trackable, starting with your age &d id verification, KYC, & whatnot. it is my computer, & i am not going to be tracked. it is the same reason you use an adblocker

@nixCraft
Same shit:
Try to buy a car nowadays and tell me it is "your car".
Geo-tracking, telemetry, subscriptions...
@ingonymous @nixCraft This! I never accept the licence agreements of the "entertainment systems".

@nixCraft

> Meta, the evil corp who is behind this

Wasn't the report that published on this revealed to be LLM garbage?

I traced $2 billion in nonprofit grants and 45 states of lobbying records to figure out who's behind the age verification bills

@nixCraft maybe I’m misunderstanding but where’s the age verification? It looks like it’s just an optional field that they don’t do anything with?
@kevinrenskers @nixCraft that's how it starts, but the stated purpose is "to protect the children" so obviously it will be found that a voluntary age/dob field is insufficient, so we need to share PII & send photos
@mattesilver @nixCraft Seems like quite a leap? I don't know, but it just seems like a lot of anger for basically nothing?

@kevinrenskers it's already the law in UK, and all Western control-freak politicians praise it

@nixCraft

@mattesilver @kevinrenskers @nixCraft

UK OFCOM (??) was suing 4Chan whose base is in the US, that didn't end up well

@kevinrenskers @nixCraft It's a pre-requisite for that functionality.

Once there's someplace to store it, there's something that can query it. Potentially lots of somethings.

@kevinrenskers @nixCraft there is no "need to know" for OS level functions for any age related info. For example, while I do not like this, it is understandable to store some biometrics in the OS, assuming they would not leave the safe storage (which is not a sensible assumption, alas) for security purposes. Age/ID related data however is not, cannot be, a subject of OS. It is very application specific, and it is folly for applications to accept any such info from OS as well.

@nixCraft > a good product

Okay, I wouldn't go that far.

@nixCraft Where the freacking heck that law about age verification tells it is applicable to anything not social media or based on onlines account. if you have hint while i search the answer, i would be glad!

@nixCraft RFK Jr. already gave us a hint at the end goals last year. Location tracking of everyone

RFK Jr Wants Every American Wearing a Smartwatch To Track Their Health by 2029 — But Will The Data Be Safe?

RFK Jr proposes a 2029 smartwatch initiative for all Americans to track health, sparking data safety concerns. His MAHA agenda aims to combat obesity.

@nixCraft thus the only valid reaction is to proactively refuse to comply and *actively sabotage such #cyberfascist efforts!

Just like noone should comply with that #cyberfascism, so should noone comply with #US-based cyberfascism either!

  • Use #Monero and give #ITAR the finger…
    • Refuse to finance #terrorism by refusing to create taxable revenue for U.S. corporations!

I certainly won't comply with cyberfascism in @OS1337 and any "#AgeVerification" is #fascist bullshit under false pretense that needs to be outlawed!

@nixCraft @reddy_1975 uh, the PR you linked was closed and not merged.

@lionel @nixCraft @reddy_1975 wait.. It's indeed not merged. So it's not reverted!

The pr was about reverting the changes.

@lionel @nixCraft @reddy_1975 this pr was to revert the original one, which added a field for age, and was merged.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Is that actually a revert? It looks like Pottering rejected the PR; am I misreading?
@arthfach @reddy_1975 i updated the post. sorry about that.

@nixCraft @reddy_1975

How did it work, they closed the PR unmerged????

@nixCraft @reddy_1975 this pr was closed by a systemd maintainer for the following reason:

"It's an optional field in the userdb JSON object. It's not a policy engine, not an API for apps. We just define the field, so that it's standardized iff people want to store the date there, but it's entirely optional."

didn't think the FOSS community would be so excited to introduce privacy violations so quickly

@synnef @reddy_1975 it’s ‘open source’, not ‘the FOSS community’
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 There's still the slop regardless of what they do with age verification.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 people absolutely positively should not send the exact same PR from their own forks. This will annoy Lennart, who doesn't want to discuss the matter. So people definitely should not do exactly this en masse. If everyone did this it would create a massive headache for Lennart, because he is the only person who knows anything about anything, and he will have to spend time personally attacking all of these people.

@rootwyrm @nixCraft @reddy_1975
@kevinrenskers

If anyone thinks this is some benign and meaningless 'tiny little thing' that is the end of the story, they have not been paying attention.

"There's no such thing as #Project2025"
"Nobody wants to eliminate #vaccines"
"We're only after the criminal #immigrants,"
"We don't want #RegimeChanges."
"We're only trying to root out the #fraud in government."

People keep lying - doing the opposite of the lie - and have your ass over a barrel. WAKE UP!

@rootwyrm @nixCraft @reddy_1975 @kevinrenskers

Does anyone think that somehow, someway, that magically the #TechSector and #OpenSource would be spared of this #fascist horseshit?

It's one more teeny hook to latch onto and break wide open. They _want_ stupid subservience, and they see the ripeness and naivete in this community and will rape and pillage to their hearts content if they aren't stopped at the onset. They vehemently #hate intelligence and will burn this village down.

@nixCraft am I reading this right? it says poettering doesn't want to merge the PR or even discuss it

@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Huh? The PR says "Closed with unmerged commits" while it only contains one commit.

Unless I'm completely missing something fundamental, this means the opposite of what you're claiming.

@nixCraft @reddy_1975 I'm tired of this trend to pressure FOSS projects, how about we revert the laws. You're still a slave of the state, might as well stay as one if your only hope is to talk nonsense online.
@gjerma @nixCraft @reddy_1975 What laws? How about we don’t let the laws of North Korea or Iran decide what our operating systems should look like?

@ahltorp @nixCraft @reddy_1975 as if those places matter when most of the tech industry is from US and Europe, it will simply snowball worldwide. I'm sure North Korea or Iran will be happy to torture anyone for trying to outsmart the system.

Mocking projects for considering laws is childish. Fight the root cause, not someone's work. Remember, major operating systems are complying. If it gets bad, applications will follow and require age verification on OS level. Stop ignoring laws, fight them

@nixCraft @reddy_1975 i've pulled a fork out to codeberg so we atleast have an unpolluted copy outside github
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 any os with age verification is getting uninstalled and replaced by something that won’t sell me out to a gaggle of jackboot techbros with mommy issues from lack of love
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Imagine inventing something as terrible as systemd and then somehow finding ways to make it even worse.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Never liked systemd mess. runit is a better, cleaner, lighter alternative.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Don't obey in advance. With this attitude, Poettering is making himself irrelevant.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 Age checking should never be done on an OS level the individual adult apps should do that.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 I’ve never taken sides or cared that passionately about the systemd debate. But I am absolutely opposed to having my ID (which is what it will become over time) handed over to my government by any open source project. It’s bad enough I have to deal with my information being sold to it from my phone or mainstream OS that I use (all without my consent).

@nixCraft @reddy_1975

"It enforces zero policy"… making it possible *is* a policy.

@nixCraft The reasoning is specious. I think people should start submitting more pointless fields that have nothing to do with systemd and see if the same reasoning holds. No policy. No enforcement. Just storing a field. So let’s get political party. Gender. Religion. Let’s get mother’s maiden name and favourite ice cream flavor. Social security number or national ID number. Phone number.

Where does it end? Can anybody propose any random shit with basically no reason and systemd will start tracking it?

It’s an absolutely stupid precedent because it’s done so frivolously.

@reddy_1975

@paco @nixCraft @reddy_1975 malicious compliance is a great way to flood them with their own medicine.
@nixCraft @reddy_1975 I guess the correct response is to start flooding systemd project with PRs to add other "optional" fields. Like number of pets, number of fingers, preferred type of coffee, pizza with or without pineapple. You know, just incase people want to use them. Seems like that's the argument behind refusing to revert the change, so it must be a valid reason to include other fields.
@nixCraft Let's hear about distros without systemd. If the maintainer isn't willing to listen to users or have a conversation about this, then maybe if debian and it's derivatives like ubuntu start losing a noticeable number of users then maybe systemd will listen to the distros???

@old_angry_queer @nixCraft

I'm inclined to think that those in power within #systemd have zero interest in what anyone says or thinks at this point.

#MicroSlop, #Meta, #IBM, and many of the project's 'supporters' have their #proxies inside being pushed/pulled into #compliance. The privacy door on Pandora's box is open, and many want to see it stay that way.

Looks like nothing has been pushed to a release - yet. What then? Trusted #distros go scorched earth or split into even more factions?

@old_angry_queer @nixCraft If you go to the search in Distrowatch and filter for 'Not-systemd' you may be shocked how many existing projects there are who have already dumped Poetterings cancer.

The thoroughly dislikeable https://mastodon.social/@pid_eins intervened to retain this reviled capability.

Totally in character.

Fortunately there are many distro's available that have all removed his invasive systemd.

@nixCraft @reddy_1975

systemd-efault is a fork from the last point before the bs patch.
