Our intro and Q from @bikemonterey

Q1. Where are you posting from today? Do you ride with fluorescent leg coverings or ankle lights, reflectors or similar? What is your experience with them, and do you have any recommendations?

#BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter cc @bikenite

@bikemonterey @bikenite A1. I am in Oakland, CA, and it's unseasonably warm. Definitely worried about climate change in general, and wildfires later in the summer.

I do have a few sets of ankle bands that have some combination of hi-vis and a reflective stripe that were from giveaways. I don't use them though I think they help. Having reflectors/lights that are moving are supposed to help provide dynamic visibility.

I've seen a few people with the Redshift Arclight pedals. Those are very visible and look pretty nice.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite I do kinda want those, but at the same time, I love my purple PNWs (because purple!) so it's a tough call!

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite I have those Redshift pedals and love them!
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1: posting from overly hot San Francisco, CA! 🔥 I haven't used those things since I wear pretty slim leg jeans. I do use lights and have reflective stickers on my bike though #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite
A1.
Posting from Arden, Ontario.
I have not been in the habit of riding at night, living in the suburbs, but now we've moved to a village I could feel a lot safer. I'll want reflective or fluorescent ankle wraps, as well as good sets of lights for the bikes.
#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Posting from near Portland, OR.The cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

My gear depends on the season.

In summer, I ride in a long sleeve neon orange shirt. In winter, I ride with a Proviz jacket and gloves. I've got RydeSafe reflective stickers all over my bike. So I glow if I am in a car's headlights.

But, I consider reflective materials to be a passive failsafe - I prefer active safety measures. Like the custom wheel lights I 3D printed.

#bikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A2 (cont) I used to have the RedShift ArcLights - they're nice because they're motion activated and always on your bike. But their battery life is not great.

I'm not sure how visible they are to drivers because they're at pedal height, and most "cars" in the US aren't, and drivers in trucks and SUVs are so high up that you would want lights up high.

...he says, relying the most on wheel lights for visibility.

#bikeNite

@yantor3d @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite Mine last a week w/ at least 5 40 minute trips. I suspect that technology might have improved.
In this college town, people see them (Ihear them slow down) on the residential streets I'm cruising.
@geonz @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite do you set them to steady or flashing? Mine only lasted two days on average, but my commute is 45-60 minutes each way...

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1: Posting from NodnoL, England :)

I ride with pink socks. I think this is a good place to put high vis fabric as usually they are in movement. More likely to be seen (if the driver is not staring at their phone)

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite #bikenite A1: Hello from Melbourne, Australia! I've got various reflective stickers on the bike and I do have a set of relective ankle straps which I got from a local bicycle advocacy org but don't often wear, but then again I don't often ride on the roads after dark. I do have lights on the bike front and back.
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite #bikeNite #bikeTooter A1 Posting from Brooklyn NY in Williamsburg next to the East River. I have some reflective ankle straps that I sometimes use at night but mostly carry as a backup in case I have forgotten my HiViz jacket with its big reflective sections.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite Fluorescent ankle bands, and I also recently got the Redshift pedals with integrated lights last year. They are heavy but what’s a hundred grams when safety is on the line?

#BikeNite

@natematias @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite who that looks cool - haven't seen those before, will have to check them out!

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

Oh also, greetings from Ithaca New York, where it's the best weekend of the year - 🍁 weekend, and I am going on a 200k tomorrow to visit a maple shack, fueled by maple syrup in my bottles and maple candy in my bag. #bikenite

@natematias @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite
I got these a couple of years ago.
I pop them out once a week or so to stick them into USB ports and recharge. My commute's about 45 minutes each way so that's a lot of hours. They are motion sensitive so I don't have to turn them on or off. (They do shut off if it's in the garage for a few days.)
I can **still ride the pedals** if they're in the charger though. So having a bad memory is not an issue.
About two years out, I sprang for a set for my other cargo bike and ... two of the litte cartridges stopped charging, and I expect others will two. I'm thinking 2 years of daily use ... is purty good. (Also, I dropped one early on and the switch broke and they just sent me a replacement, no questions asked.)
I have sold a few -- 2 of the 3 were 'what can I get my biker person for Christmas?" And I said "THIS --> they won't want to spend that much but they will LOVE THEM." (The third was a neighbor who went down to Itty Bitty Bike SHop and said their neighbor had them so Geoff said, "Oh, you live on Anderson Street?" which kinda freaked him :P )

A1) I'm posting from the Coconino National Forest, but from a different part of the forest than I posted from last week.

I rarely ride on the road and never at night, so no reflective or hi-visibility gear at all.

#bikenite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1. Rushford, Minnesota.

I have lots of reflective stuff. I put a reflective vest on at night. Before I retired I would get off work at 8pm, 10pm, 12am, or 2am. They did help with people who *were* paying attention, so fewer close calls.. The ones who weren't and speeding -- not so much. They would have hit a truck instead, too.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite i'm posting from Naarm.
A1 #bikeNite i try to avoid protective items on me (other than the legally required helmet) because if it isn't on the bike i'm too likely to forget it.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1: Nagoya, Japan. My bikes have a front and rear light, but I've ridden in black or dark blue garb at night without worrying much. That has to do with the environment though: on our streets I'm able to ride where they ain't, if I take it slow.

From April, a new rule in Japan will require bikes to stay off sidewalks and mix in traffic. I haven't looked it up, but I figure the police won't be too eager to force riders to endanger themselves.
#bikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite Following up on the change to Japan traffic regs coming up next month, it seems that the constraints remain the same: riding on sidewalks when necessary for personal safety is permitted, but in that case pedestrians always have right of way. The principle change is in ticketing requirements. Most violations will just be punishable by a simplified administrative procedure that doesn't require a hearing. So no change to my riding habits.

I don't, but our teenager uses them to hold the school pants in for the school ride. Call me hypocritical, I think they're great for being seen, I'm just old and jaded and know damn well that drivers can see me, they just don't give a damn

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Posting from home in New England, USA, as usual.

I do not have special reflectors or lights for my feet, but my pedals have reflectors and I use front and rear lighting around the clock. On my primary transportation ebike, I have two front and two rear lights on at all times, plus reflective decals on my helmet and reflective stripes on my tires. My outerwear also has reflective piping, and there are reflective stripes on my panniers.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1: Posting from York in Yorkshire, UK.

I have ridden with reflective ankle bands and a small flashing light on the right ankle* in the past, but I don't nowadays. I do have reflective tape on the cranks and rear rack though. My cycle luggage also has reflective patches on the rear side. I also have Proviz reflective clothing for nocturnal usage.

* I live in the UK, where we ride on the correct side of the road! 😂🤣😂🤣😂

#BikeNite

@yorkie @ascentale @bikemonterey

The top side of the road for the win!

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1 posting from Vienna, Austria, Europe.

No reflectors, no high viz that I am aware of, so no recommendations.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Ventura County, California. Being a cautious cyclist, all of my bicycles are covered with reflective stickers... COVERED. I also have reflective tape on my backpack (which I typically ride with). Also reflective wind jacket, if I am wearing it in cooler weather. And if I plan on being on any major roads, I use a safety vest. did I mention I am a cautious cyclist? The "safe" bicycle (with hauling capacity) looks like this in the dark with a headlamp/flashlight on it.
@ai6yr @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite This reminds me of that scene at the end of Repo Man
@ai6yr @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite Bro, you’re in Burning Man territory now. Lots of enthusiasts to connect with on bike decoration and visibility!

@ai6yr

Get four of these and then race on the grid like in Tron

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite HI I'M LATE A1: Usual north of Seattle, inside Line A, all that noise. I do not wear special clothing when biking but that's okay, my bike's blingy enough.

Seriously if you can't see me coming you're wearing a welder mask or some shit there's no excuse xD

#BikeNite

@moira @ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite
I don't wear "special" clothing but my helmet is flamboyant and seasonal and the cargo bike is huge. #bikenite late too
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. From my usual Seattle. I use a reflective neon strap when I wear pants while riding and I also have some light-up angle straps that I sometimes use at night to supplement my bike lights. They seem pretty nice, but I don't know what brand they are. Here's a picture though.
#bikenite
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite
*something in the spokes* really helps, or something on the pedals goin' round and round.
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Nashville, TN. Posting late because I was just out on a casual/chill group bike ride. I have some of those reflector bands but I just have them attached to my bike basket. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Riding around Tootlanta as usual. I don't have any high viz/blinkers for my legs really. I think I have a single pant leg holder that has some reflectors, but I still haven't gotten the memo about skinny jeans being out so I rarely use it. I prefer those kinds of things to just be integrated onto the bike or the clothing I'm going to wear rather than a separate additional thing to put on.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Northern Virginia as always. I had some cute ankle reflectors, but both of them fell off somewhere. Do not recommend. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1 #bikenite Joining tonight from north west Minnesota in Blackduck. I have Rainlegs to wear if riding in the rail, but otherwise I don’t specifically wear alot of reflective as I’m not usually riding at night. I do have lights fore and aft and reflectors on the spokes and pedals and I wear a noxgear tracer 2 to help with drivers behind me.
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite Australia, first Melbourne, then Newcastle, on my way to Sydney (wife is on business, I am touristing). I load most of my visibility aids onto my bike(s), not myself. A1#BikeNite

#BikeNite A1: #WaterlooRegion, as usual.

I wear a yellow reflective "snap band" on my ankle, and a silver reflective armband when I can find it. It used to be my ankle strap, good for holding my pants cuff. I wear both straps on the traffic side (left in Canada).

The snap band is too loose, and I'm constantly checking it hasn't fallen off. The armband is getting old, and much of the reflective surface has worn off. I may get something with lights instead.

@bikemonterey @bikenite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1: 'tis I, the late Moz in Sydney, Oz. I've been out house hunting and about ready to start hunting real estate agents.

I have a fluoro flip strap thing I got as a promo item ages ago, it's faded but still lives round the seatpost on my cargo bike for the times I ride in long pants.

I'm a bit fan of self-adhesive reflective tape. There's bits of it all over my bikes.

A1.
Tucked up in bed in Manchester, Englandshire. It's quarter past six in the morning and too early for coffee.

No. I've tried them for running in the past, but never really got on with them.
The closest I have now is a reflective strip on the back of my sandals (Shimano SD501), and a nominally reflective bit around the top of my Dexshell socks.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1. nodnoL, UK

I use reflective snapbands around my ankles when I commutes in the winter, but not in summer.

Nothing else on my legs because if drivers don't see those which are 360° reflective, then they're not looking and nothing will help.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1
Still cycling on a remote Scottish island

I've got a couple of snap bands which never make it onto my legs - generally wearing jeans when I'm travelling about the island, and the snap bands are too short to stay in place.
My touring bike is covered in red reflective tape (on the bike frame and pannier rack)

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1 #bikeNite Cumbria, UK and not specifically but most my ‘legs’ will have at least some kind of reflective trim or detail, and some an actual panel of reflective material.
I’d always go with kit you like and are comfy in rather than choosing for it being perceived as somehow safer. Chances are it will have some of the same features anyway.

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1. Home in Rome, as ever. I do have reflective ankle things, those spring steel bands that you can sort of snap round your ankle (Or wrists when walking out at night). I find them very useful both for keeping my trousers out of the chain ring and, I hope, for alerting drivers to my existence. But I have no idea how effective they actually are.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Hello from Highcliffe-on-Sea, my commute is dark country lanes and not-busy cycle paths, so I rely on lights, plus the winter jackets and bibs have a big reflective panel on the back which is disguised in daylight, but is very reflective. Were I in heavy traffic or well lit areas where the bike lights aren't so obvious I might want to be more visible but I would go with a ProViz jacket or similar because I find "reflective details" ineffective. Fluorescent is all very well as long as there's enough light to make it fluoresce. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite I have a pair of ankle reflectors that serve me mostly in winter and when I wear flared pants. Bought them for about €4 at a building materials store.
@A_denie Ah! Building materials store is a good tip for folks, thanks for pointing out that possibility. Graniterock is where we found a hi- vis vest for $8 in 2010. Phone ahead for current price and availability (to be sure the item is in stock). @ascentale @bikenite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Eastern PA. Sorry I have not been here for a bit.

I have worn the reflective ankle wraps, in my bike commuting days, that I also used to keep my pants cuffs ojt of the chain. They worked great for that but as for safety, who knows. I never got hit but there is no way to say it was these reflectors or anything else.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite #BikeNite A1: Posting from Zurich, Switzerland. I usually wear narrow, yellow fluorescent and reflective ankle bands (by Wowow) so that my jeans don't get dirty on the chain and for better visibilty.

But I only wear them with long trousers. I though also have quite colorful (often yellow fluorescent) socks or socks with reflective stripes woven in at ankle height.

On some shoes I applied silver or black reflective textile stickers from https://reflective.berlin/

Probably too late today but it is MSR and also a lovely spring day

London per usual

Yes. They are the best place to attract attention.

Sealskin led overshoes.

But I don't do huge amount of night riding nowdays

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1. Santa Clara, CA. Where it is not over 90/32 today, breaking five days in a row…

I don’t wear reflective ankle bands, because I avoid riding at night (and missing out I know). But I do sometimes wear them walking at night, which I don’t do often. But I don’t mind wearing them, and I think that they do make me more visible, which is why I put them on. I know, I know we shouldn’t have to but I like seeing others when I’m out out at night, so I figure others would like to see me. #BikeNight

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite

A1. Posting from an unexpectedly dry moment on the #LeftCoast of #Canada!

A1.a. I have a reflective trouser strap for the right leg in my bag, worn primarily with a pair of rain slacks to keep them out of the chain rings. I have not, personally, noticed any visibility benefit to it.

As a sometimes-driver, I do see and note peds - and their dogs - who glow unnaturally in the dark/foggy.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikemonterey @bikenite A1: Posting from Seattle, WA. I use an ankle strap when riding with wide-leg pants. The strap is made of reflective material. I have no idea if it helps me be seen better. #BikeNite
