The investigation also reveals how Israel has known for years that the use of bunker-buster bombs releases the lethal gas carbon monoxide as a byproduct, which can kill people inside a tunnel through asphyxiation even at a distance of hundreds of meters from the strike location. After discovering this by chance in 2017, the army first tested it as a strategy in Gaza in 2021, and employed it in its efforts to kill Hamas commanders after October 7. This way, the army could attack targets without knowing their precise location, and without to rely on direct hits.

Bei der gezielten Ausschaltung hochrangiger Kommandeure der Gruppe genehmigte das israelische Militär die Tötung einer „dreistelligen Zahl“ palästinensischer Zivilisten als „Kollateralschaden“ und hielt eine enge Echtzeit-Koordination mit US-Beamten bezüglich der erwarteten Opferzahlen aufrecht.<p> Einige dieser Angriffe, die zu den tödlichsten des Krieges gehörten und bei denen oft amerikanische Bomben zum Einsatz kamen, haben bekanntermaßen israelische Geiseln getötet, obwohl Militäroffiziere im Vorfeld Bedenken geäußert hatten. Darüber hinaus führte der Mangel an präzisen Informationen dazu, dass die Armee bei mindestens drei größeren Angriffen mehrere 2.000-Pfund-Bunker-Buster-Bomben abwarf, die Dutzende Zivilisten töteten – Teil einer Strategie, die als „Tiling“ bekannt ist –, ohne das beabsichtigte Ziel zu treffen.<p> <em>„Ein Ziel in einem Tunnel zu lokalisieren, ist schwierig, daher greift man einen [großen] Radius an“</em>, sagte eine Quelle des Militärgeheimdienstes gegenüber +972 und Local Call. Da die Armee nur eine vage Vorstellung von der Lage des Ziels haben würde, erklärte die Quelle, würde dieser Radius -zig und manchmal hunderte Meter‘ betragen, was bedeutet, dass diese Bombenangriffe mehrere Wohnhäuser mitsamt ihren Bewohnern ohne Vorwarnung zum Einsturz brachten. <em>„Plötzlich sieht man, wie sich jemand in der IDF wirklich verhält, wenn er die Möglichkeit hat, einen ganzen Wohnblock auszulöschen – und sie tun es“</em>, fügte die Quelle hinzu.<p> Die Untersuchung zeigt auch, dass Israel seit Jahren weiß, dass beim Einsatz von bunkerbrechenden Bomben das tödliche Gas Kohlenmonoxid als Nebenprodukt freigesetzt wird, das Menschen in einem Tunnel durch Ersticken töten kann, selbst wenn es Hunderte von Metern vom Angriffsort entfernt ist. Nachdem die Armee dies 2017 zufällig entdeckt hatte, testete sie es erstmals 2021 als Strategie in Gaza und setzte es nach dem 7. Oktober bei ihren Bemühungen ein, Hamas-Kommandeure zu töten. Auf diese Weise konnte die Armee Ziele angreifen, ohne deren genauen Standort zu kennen und ohne auf direkte Treffer angewiesen zu sein.<p> <em>„Das Gas bleibt unter der Erde und die Menschen ersticken“,</em> sagte Brigadegeneral (a. D.) Guy Hazoot, die einzige Quelle, die bereit war, namentlich genannt zu werden, gegenüber +972 und Local Call. <em>“[Wir haben erkannt], dass wir mit den Bunker-Busting-Bomben der Luftwaffe effektiv jeden unter der Erde treffen können, der sich dort aufhält. Der Tunnel wird dann zu einer Todesfalle.“<p> </em>Im Januar 2024 erklärte ein Sprecher der israelischen Armee gegenüber +972 und Local Call als Reaktion auf <a href="https://www.972mag.com/weapons-toxic-gas-gaza-hostages/">eine frühere Untersuchung</a>, dass sie<em> „niemals Nebenprodukte des Bombenabwurfs eingesetzt hat und auch derzeit nicht einsetzt, um ihre Ziele zu schädigen, und dass es eine solche ‚Technik‘ bei der IDF nicht gibt“.</em> Unsere neue Untersuchung zeigt jedoch, dass die Luftwaffe physikalisch-chemische Forschungen über die Wirkung des Gases in geschlossenen Räumen durchgeführt hat und das Militär über die ethischen Auswirkungen der Methode nachgedacht hat.<p> Drei israelische Geiseln – Nik Beizer, Ron Sherman und Elia Toledano – wurden am 10. November 2023 bei einem Bombenanschlag auf Ahmed Ghandour, einen Brigadekommandeur der Hamas im Norden des Gazastreifens, definitiv durch Ersticken getötet. Die Armee teilte ihren Familien mit, dass sie zum Zeitpunkt des Bombenangriffs nicht wusste, dass in der Nähe von Ghandour Geiseln festgehalten wurden. Drei Quellen, die über den vom Shin Bet geleiteten Angriff informiert waren, berichteten jedoch gegenüber +972 und Local Call, dass es <em>„zweideutige“</em> Geheimdienstinformationen gab, die darauf hindeuteten, dass sich Geiseln in der Nähe aufhalten könnten, der Angriff aber dennoch genehmigt wurde.<p> Sechs Quellen zufolge handelte es sich hierbei nicht um einen Einzelfall, sondern um einen von <em>„Dutzenden“</em> israelischen Luftangriffen, bei denen Geiseln wahrscheinlich gefährdet oder getötet wurden.
