OH MY GOD. I could not get rear quarter windows of my car to go up the last month. Too lazy to take to dealer. So I subscribed to Lexus dealer diagnostics docs for $25 for 2 days.

I go to troubleshooting section.
1.) Battery connected?
2.) Engine on?
3.) Window lock off?

FML🤬

@SwiftOnSecurity To be fair, the dealer would have charged you $250 for 2 days.
@SwiftOnSecurity I've inadvertently locked my windows SOOOO many times that it's basically the first thing I check when they behave other than as expected.
@SwiftOnSecurity This seems like a good example of how an expert on a given technical matter could totally fail at another technical matter. (For the record, it took me a while to figure out the same problem on my Mazda)
@SwiftOnSecurity Please tell us you have pirated all the docs in the last few days for us all?
@SwiftOnSecurity Sounds like it was worth the expense, or that would’ve been both an expensive dealer visit, either in terms of time/monetary cost — or appearing on one of the “Just Rolled In” / “Customer States” compilations.
@SwiftOnSecurity I did the same thing except I hit it when a cop pulled me over, and I couldn’t roll down the window for him…
@SwiftOnSecurity Holy crap, I've had my car 23 years and never knew that button was there! You just saved me from taking apart my passenger door for no reason, thanks! :)

@SwiftOnSecurity Hey, an easy fix is an easy fix.

This morning I spent several minutes trying to figure out why a route wasn’t being advertised over bgp and then realized the peer was down. #TheresYourProblem

@SwiftOnSecurity I mean, we all know there is a reason that’s in the documentation. The problem is the people who need that are *not* searching the KB for answers.
@mitchneff @SwiftOnSecurity UX is just as much about letting the user know how to fix their own stupid problem as it is about letting them do the smart thing in their few clever moments.
@SwiftOnSecurity I dunno, I smell more 'win' than 'loss' here. You spent $25 but saved yourself a trip to the dealer, a day without a car and probably a $200+ diagnostic charge. You done good!
@SwiftOnSecurity I guess tech-support is the same everywhere, for every product
@SwiftOnSecurity
At least you didn't pay $100 to have an HVAC tech come out to change two AA batteries in your thermostat?
@SwiftOnSecurity that fact that you need to pay a subscription for documentation is downright offensive.

@zorinlynx @SwiftOnSecurity Do keep in mind that this is a service manual, not a user's manual.

I assume the subscription not only gives you access to all manuals for all past and current vehicles of that brand, but also future ones AND up to date errata and recall notices.

For $25/month, that's basically peanuts for a 3rd-party dealer to be up to date, being able to provide basically the same service that the official dealer can.

@SwiftOnSecurity Now go to the dealer and see how much they try to charge to figure out if you can trust them when it matters.
@SwiftOnSecurity Even from the driver's controls? Most cars still let it operate the windows with the lock on, so doing otherwise seems counterintuitive.
@redrummy it's a convertible so it's unique
@redrummy @SwiftOnSecurity I would also expect that. On basically every car I've been in that had window lock systems, in all of them the driver side control would still allow commands to all the windows.
@nanianmichaels the weird convertible windows are controlled by a master switch that gets disabled

@SwiftOnSecurity OH, they're not the regular windows.

That makes more sense, there's probably a chance for PEBCAK (or in this case, PEBCASW) in some combination of window state and roof retraction if you allow them to move willy nilly 😝

@redrummy @SwiftOnSecurity I have never seen a car that lets even the driver control the windows when the window lock is active.

And it's extremely stupid.

What possible reason can there be for the window lock to exist other than to stop the kids in the back from screwing around with the windows?

So I'm on the freeway, little twerp in the back opens the window and holds down his button. Now all I can do is hit the window lock and both of us are locked out.

Well done, terrorists win.

@_yossi_ @SwiftOnSecurity Yeah, because kids and pets. Most cars I've seen still let the driver have control so I guess you haven't seen that many. It's pretty common.

@redrummy @SwiftOnSecurity OK, bet.

Partial list of cars where the driver can not control the other windows in the car (except the driver's window) while the window lock is active:

2000 Honda civic
2004 Lexus LS430
2010 Toyota prius
2016 Honda crv
201? Toyota seienna
2020 Chevy bolt
2020 Honda odyssey
@SwiftOnSecurity's car.

But I clearly haven't driven many cars. Maybe you can supply an example?

@_yossi_ @redrummy @SwiftOnSecurity Surprised to see Chevy bolt on this list. Had several Silverados and 2 Equinoxes since '04, and I'm fairly certain all of them allowed driver control of all windows when lock was enabled.

Also '12 Subaru Outback, '15 Forester, '21 Mazda CX5 and '23 Hyundai Santa Cruz all allow driver control of all windows with lock engaged.

Edit: was just corrected by 'the boss' re the Mazda. So I checked. She's right.

@SwiftOnSecurity lol don't feel bad. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't open the trunk. Until the kind Lexus dealer person on the phone asked me if I had pressed the "valet button" in the glove box

Me: the what?

Me, after fumbling around with the manual: *facepalm*

I thanked him sheepishly and hung up after vaguely remembering that I had pushed that button for the, ya know, valet

@SwiftOnSecurity I once called my employer in a panic to say I wouldn't be coming in because my car wouldn't start. Turns out I forgot I just got an automatic and had shut it off in neutral with the parking brake on 🙄
@SwiftOnSecurity It's a thing we all do once in a while. It's okay.

@SwiftOnSecurity

It happens to all of us.

@SwiftOnSecurity @yuki2501 I did that too on my SUV once. I was so angry at how much time I wasted. I am glad I didn't take it in though. Right now my SUV's hatch back latching is really messed up, but it's 23 years old.
@SwiftOnSecurity superb. This is "turn it off and on again" level 👀
@SwiftOnSecurity That's exactly why support asks you to reboot when you think it makes no sense. Even experts make mistakes.
@SwiftOnSecurity if it is on windows, then try alt-ctrl-delete.
@SwiftOnSecurity in your defense, the window lockout often only disables the controls in the rear and not in the driver’s door.
@SwiftOnSecurity Wait the lock switch prevents the *driver* controls from working as well? That's wild, I've never seen that!
@AGTMADCAT the driver controls do t control the convertible rear windows directly
@SwiftOnSecurity You know, thinking about my own convertible now, the rear passengers don't get their own window controls. I've just gone out and checked and there is no window lock button at all. I can't think of a reason why you'd want one if it's not a child-proofing measure like in most cars, any ideas?
@SwiftOnSecurity This the first time it wasn’t DNS or a dodgy Ethernet cable?
