@caseynewton
Itās a polluted pond of fish. As the numbers continue to evaporate those who leave sooner will survive best in a new environment even though thereās an adjustment period.
Those who remain will not see how sick itās making them until itās too late. They fail to recognize that twitter didnāt exist at some point and will fail to exist again shortly. If Twitter is their only audience theyāve been doing it wrong from the jump.
Many of them have been and it shows.
@caseynewton Followers ā audience. The people who are truly your audience will follow you to Mastodon or any other platform.
Despite all their followers, most journalists don't see themselves as leaders with the ability to set an example, and inspire and motivate others.
@caseynewton I posted to twitter today and I honestly think I'm done with it forever. the level of engagement there is almost non-existent at this point, and any attempt to gin up engagement just leads to trolling.
there is little reason to be on twitter anymore even if one has a completely mercenary attitude toward pointing an audience toward one's work, imho
There are a lot of people who only see Social Media (and microblogging in particular) as a branding/marketing/distribution channel.
I looked at Notes the other day, and it really was just Substackers saying, āSubscribe to my newsletter!ā
And of course, they were not engaging with ācivilians.ā
Hard pass.
@mimsical @caseynewton Iāve posted maybe a dozen tweets since December and itās just like screaming into an empty room.
Not sure if my account itās prioritized anymore due to going somewhat dormant, or people arenāt using it as much, or some other reason, but itās not the same experience at all.
Umm.. there is. You may not agree to the notion that it is difficult (I do not), but the mention is there.
@gedeonm @caseynewton @anildash I just realized all those people on Twitter who say they canāt leave ⦠maybe we really donāt want them here because they donāt want to have reasonable discourse but want to be āan influencerā - to āgo viralā.
If thatās the case, Iām ok with them staying over there.
@caseynewton youād think the deliberate platforming of actual Naziās and the disgusting treatment of employees would be reason enough for decent people to post pictures of good dogs on a different website.
Iām not sure I want them in my feed here when the view counts cross a threshold whereby their nazi/klout calculation tips in favour of leaving.
Like the Titanic, only 700 or so survived because the rest still didn't believe there was any real danger until AFTER the lifeboats had mostly left, most half-empty.
But once the waterline reached the open doors and cabin portals, it started to happen VERY quickly.
@caseynewton Musk's $44 billion sandbox isn't simply falling apart ā Musk is actively mutilating it.

There arenāt many tech sites more conservative or investment focused than TechCrunch. But that doesnāt mean they think much of how billionaire Elon Musk has handled his $44B investment in a company that he now personally values at $20B. In fact, the...

"I'm ok with helping a far right bigot make money because that's where my audience is."
It is as terrible as it sounds.

@caseynewton Something I'm feeling is that a lot of news/discussion about The Death Of Twitter is focused on people who use it for promotion and not people who just want to see what their friends are doing...
I'm not on twitter (or here, etc.) for an audience, I'm on twitter to see my friends - and for better or worse, it's still going to be worth using for me as long as they are there (and as long as it's possible to, you know, actually see content from people I chose to follow š)
I wish it would.
