But all positions deemed acceptable in today’s Republican Party are in line with anti-democratic traditions in conservatism. The key question has always been: How much authoritarianism and militant extremism is necessary to prevent too much democracy for the “wrong” people?

And of course, Twitter is now run by a right-wing extremist who uses the platform to promote right-wing extremism.

This is the social-media trendline as we head into an election that will decide the fate of democracy.

Thread: The first rule in GOP politics is that you should never believe right-wing media. Donald Trump forgot this & it's why he could spend life in prison.

In the past, Trump didn't believe reactionary media. But over time, they've sucked him in and filled his head with delusional ideas.

Most dangerously for Trump, these ideas have legal consequences.

There are basically three groups in Republican politics:
1) The (mostly ignorant) voters. They generally have little understanding of policy and are mostly motivated by identity politics.
2) The activists & propagandists. They promote Republican pols, attack Dems, and motivate the voters. True believers.
3) The elite inner circle. These people are totally cynical operators.
