Question for my fellow freelance translators: Do you do post-editing or do you refuse on principle? If you do take post-editing work, do you charge a higher hourly rate (than, say, for revising layout proofs of your own work)?

I've managed to avoid post-editing thus far, but a long-time client just asked me to proof a document they "translated internally." Not quite sure what to do going forward.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of BS this PM is shovelling at me: I'm translating the subtitles for a video. In this case, there will be parallel FR and EN subtitles. At one point, I translated “toute sorte” as “all sorts" and the PM wants me to use a singular idiom "so that people don't think there's a mistake in the French subtitles.”

Please, God, on the off chance you exist, take me now.

Doing some translating work over the holidays. I've just spent about 10 minutes translating one sentence that involved comparing the Croatian and English version of the webpage of the Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art to see what the study programs are officially called and what they used to be called in the 1960s. I should probably run it through #ChatGPT to compare.

Dear client,

If you email me on Wednesday afternoon asking if I can translate a two-page document for EOD Thursday, and I reply that, yes, it's possible, as long as I get the document by noon, have the courtesy to confirm that you will or will not be booking my Thursday afternoon. I was wondering why I was feeling uneasy about this document – no red squiggly lines anywhere. It was eerie.

Turns out, the client sent this MS Word document with with spelling and grammar set to “Hide Spelling Errors/Hide Grammar Errors."
