How Scapple Helps Authors Plan Books

How and why Literature and Latte's Scapple mind-mapping tool is helping indie authors plan the writing of their self-published books - case study by Jeff Shear

The Self-Publishing Advice Center

I'm planning to do #NaNoWriMo (I know the org is gone, but ye can't stop me writing a book) next month, so I've been taking scraps of time to do bits of "planning". Any by "planning" I mean brain-dumping thematic ephemera incoherently into a #Scapple board.

Writing is boring and hard.

Digging into the #ColdCityRPG Dossier to find the connections with a view of getting it to the table sometime in the new year. Using #scapple to map the connections.

The Cold City Dossier is a found evidence style module; full of fake documents, its for the GM to pull together the scenario. It can be seen as a precursor to game material like The Armitage Files, Absinthe in Carcosa and the Dracula Dossier. I'm fortunate in having a hardcopy as well as the electronic files.

Da mein Tool iThoughtsX vom Entwickler aufgegeben wurde, werde ich zurück zu #Scapple gehen. #mindmapping #tools #scrivener #brainstorming

There is some discussion about the "loss" of iThoughtsX: https://talk.macpowerusers.com/t/toketaware-is-out-of-business-and-along-with-it-ithoughtsx/36169/43
I think I will go back to Scapple which I own anyway. I tried many other "classic" MindMapping tools in the past but none of them did fit like iThoughtsX. I also don't like subscription models for such central tools. #macos #software #tools #mindmapping #Scapple
toketaWare is out of business, and along with it iThoughtsX

I agree. The pricing for app subscriptions often bears little relation to the value they deliver. Drafts at $20/year and Bear at $30 seem fairly priced. Fantastical at $60/year is pushing it, and is probably worth it only to people who have very full schedules or have to frequently arrange meetings with 3 or more people who have few openings. I’m sure NotePlan is a great app, but $120 a year is just nuts, especially since you have to pay for your own iCloud storage on top of it. (I know some ...

Besides using #Zavala for lists and outlines, I will re-activate #Scapple for mind maps (after iThoughtsX was closed down). #tools #mindmap #outline

@TfTHacker Tbh, Canvas came out of left field for me. It wasn’t something I was wishing for or expecting, though I played with it when it came out. So far I really only use mindmaps for brainstorming, and I still find #Scapple a little quicker and easier to use for that (just drag a node to another node to connect them). I also prefer Scapple’s straight connector lines to Canvas’s squiggly ones.

I know you can link to stuff in your vault, and I may find a use for #Obsidian Canvas eventually.

@MelRootsNWrites thanks for mentioning #Scapple. I wasn’t familiar with it, although I’ve used #Scrivener for years. I think I will give it a try. As for making charts like you showed of DNA matches, I actually put them into #Reunion and generate charts that way. Sometimes into an Ancestry tree. I put the # of cM as a suffix after the name. Works pretty well and also I’ve preserved the data in tree format that can be exported as a Gedcom at any point. #GeneticGenealogy

I've been trying to find a way to analyze my #DNA matches. I want to get a better idea of what relationship I share with a match and how much DNA we share. I'm a big fan of #Scapple and used it to lay out my Dad's maternal matches.

It will be interesting to compare maternal to paternal. Maybe I will get some insights.

Do you use charts to help you understand your DNA matches?
