Back in February I shared a letter that Jack had received giving him advance notice that he was to be called up for training as part of the Reservists.

The time has now come and this letter, dated #OnThisDay 22 June 1951, provides a little more detail as to what Jack could expect.

He was to be at the camp at RAF Long Marston, Warwickshire, for two weeks as part of training with 751 Quarrying Squadron, Royal Engineers. Along with the letter is a list of items he was to bring with him, and a note of exactly where Jack was to be housed: Camp 3, Hut 11, Bed 5.

I've not included all the pages here, but a full transcript can be found here: https://cjhearn.co.uk/1951-06-22-Jack-Hearn-training-letter.txt

Controversy erupted in 1811 when the Clerk of Survey at Dublin Castle claimed the works were not “well or substantially executed, are deficient in grouting... measurements are erroneous and the prices not correct”, prompting indignant arguments with the #RoyalEngineers involved! The tower was seized by Anti Treaty forces in July 1922 during the #IrishCivilWar until the Free State Army shelled the building into submission. 3/3

William Hunt (1881 - 1961) attested 7th December 1915. A Grantham Journal report suggests that William was exempt from military service as he was one of the council's two main roadmen, he was not mobilised until 9th September 1918 when he joined ‘A’ Corps of the Road and Quarry Troops, RE, Sapper WR43927. But the war was nearly over and William was transferred to British Army Reserve on 18th February 1919.
