These photographs were all in an envelope dated 30 October 1951, however I know that can't be correct as they show the Festival of Britain, which ran between 4 May - 30 September that year. Looking at the trees and what people are wearing, I'd say it probably is September.

The photos show a family trip to visit the Festival on London's South Bank - albeit one that nearly didn't happen after their car broke down on the way. Thankfully, having a mechanic at the wheel and another called for help, the car was fixed at the roadside and they went on their way. The family is my grandparents - Bob and Phyllis, with sons Colin (my dad), and David.

Dad, the older boy in the first photo, remembers this day, saying the car problem was "the gearbox or prop shaft, or something like that".

At the Festival, some of the things they saw included an Indian Government Railways steam locomotive, and Skylon, the iconic metal structure that gave the illusion of floating above the riverbank.

Today, the 1977 Silver Jubilee guidepost on the path near the 'Jubiloos' marks the approximate location of where Skylon stood.

#OnThisDay 60 years ago, 23 October 1965, Jack and Mary's niece (Jack's sister Christine's daughter), Angela Hearn, married Derek Foale. The register office marriage was followed by the family gathering for a wedding breakfast hosted at Jack and Mary's house - these photos were taken in their garden.

The first photo is Angela and Derek, just married. Photo 2 are Angela's mother, Christine, and step-father Maurice. Photo 3 is Jack and Mary. Photo 4 is my nan, Phyllis Hearn with sons David and Colin (my dad), cousins of Angela.

These photos appear in the timeline in what's turned out to be a sombre week of the year: David died a year ago last Monday (20th), Jack died 4 years ago today just weeks from his 101st birthday, and my mum passed 6 years tomorrow.

One last visit to the beach before the journey home, taken #OnThisDay 77 years ago, 2 October 1948.

Even though I already knew from the caption these photos were taken on Hayling Island, I immediately recognised where Jack and Mary are sitting on the beach as Eastoke from having recently visited there. They're sitting at Eastoke Corner, roughly where the car park, playground and toilets are today, near the Hayling Light Railway station.

#OnThisDay, 1 October 1948, and it's nearly the end of the honeymoon. Jack heads to a local garage to give the car a check over and pump up the tyres ready for the journey home.

On their way back from their trip to Scotland, Jack and Mary stop off at junction 37 of the M6 where the Lambrigg Wind Farm had just opened. Photos taken #OnThisDay 25 years ago, 30 September 2000.

It's a sunny end to September #OnThisDay in 1948 with Jack snoozing on the beach at Hayling Island. The Met Office weather archives confirms it to have been a blue sky day with some cloud, temperatures around 19°C.

Jack and Mary were in Southsea near Portsmouth #OnThisDay 77 years ago, 27 September 1948. The monument in the background helps pinpoint exactly where Jack is sitting - this is the Battle of Trafalgar memorial with HMS Victory's anchor as its eye-catching feature on top of the stone plinth.

Sunday 26 September 1948, #OnThisDay 77 years ago, and it's time for Jack and Mary to go to church (maybe for the first time as a married couple), whilst on their honeymoon on Hayling Island.

#OnThisDay 77 years ago, 25 September 1948, Jack and Mary take a bus ride around Hayling. Although the building behind Mary in the second photo quite clearly seems to read "The Bar Club", I've not been able to locate where this building is/was.

The open-top Southdown bus in the handwritten caption is referred to as "the Ferry Special".

Jack and Mary stop for a couple of photos on "the road leading to Havant" on their Hayling Island honeymoon, #OnThisDay 24 September 1948.
