My historian exwife scoffed (scoffed!) when I said sure, these might be ancient #fertility or holy symbols for women, but they were also definitely porn for (straight) men, too. And probably lesbians. As a WLW herself, one would think she might understand.

Seriously, how many teenage boys have drawn women with huge butts, massive breasts, and/or luscious thick thighs but almost no facial details? We cannot have changed that much in 30,000 years. If some sacred order of women in 25,000 BCE was crafting little holy sculptures of ultra-curvy, highly sexualized women's bodies, you know some teenage boys were sneaking into the shrine at night to take very non-holy glances at it.

4,000-year-old teeth record the earliest traces of people chewing psychoactive betel nuts

Humans have used psychoactive plants for their narcotic effects for thousands of years. Throughout Thailand, remains of betel nuts, plants used for their stimulant effects, have been discovered at burial sites. To learn more about the practice, an international team of researchers have examined 4,000-year-old teeth and found traces of compounds from betel nuts. This indicates that betel nut chewing has been practiced for thousands of years, if not more, in the country. The study is the first to detect ‘archaeologically invisible’ cues in dental plaque, revealing ancient behaviors and practices that otherwise could have been lost to time.

Body of a woman is discovered among the remains of 25 warrior monks of the Order of Calatrava in Guadalajara

A research project led by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and the Max Planck Institute has studied the remains of 25 individuals buried between the 12th and 15th centuries in the castle at Zorita de los Canes, Guadalajara. After exhuming the remains from the castle’s cemetery, the research team was able to determine the diet, lifestyle and causes of death of the warrior monks, who were members of the Order of Calatrava. The results, published in the journal Scientific Reports, have determined that 23 of the individuals died in battle and that the knights of the order followed a diet typical of medieval high society, with a considerable intake of animal protein and marine fish, in an area far from the coast. Unexpectedly, Carme Rissech, a researcher at the URV, identified the remains of a woman among the warrior monks.

In the West Country, an extremely rare 'polishing stone' has been found. The huge boulder has a smooth dip in which neolithic people would have polished the cutting edges of stone tools.

Intellectual prejudice regarding pre-colonial native tribes and #Mesoamerican cultures, in particular, is one of the greatest tragedies of modern academia. I can not understand how any educated person acting in good faith can believe that native tribes and cultures were anything less than the beautiful, vibrant, and industrious people that they were. The number of times I have seen archeological finds dismissed as 'not being possible' or because 'there must have been other factors at play' is wretched. I refuse to acknowledge these claims to be anything other than purposefully demeaning as it betrays the underlying thought that pre-colonial natives were nothing but savage cave people, which only strengthens colonial ideology...
