Agriculture drives most tropical peatland loss in Indonesia, Peru and DRC: Study

A new study finds agriculture is the leading driver of tropical peatland loss in Indonesia, Peru and the DRC, with fires from land clearing causing major short-term greenhouse gas emissions and long-term climate risks.

Peatlands are vital for tackling climate change, yet scientists still haven’t found them all

Peatlands are central to climate change, yet basic questions remain unanswered. A global research community has mapped out what we most urgently need to know.

"By working closely with farmers and graziers we can ensure that they can continue to graze the land. Sustainable grazing benefits the peatland as it helps to keep it healthy by preventing any one species from dominating."

Peatland restoration can deliver climate mitigation benefits within a few decades

New research indicates that restoration of peatlands can result in climate mitigation within just a few decades. In Finland, some 60,000 hectares of previously forestry-drained peatlands have already been restored, comprising mainly nutrient-poor sites with weak tree growth. In such cases, peatland plants remain viable and react rapidly to restoration, resulting in the formation of a thick new layer of Sphagnum moss.

Ditches on peatland oil palm plantations are an overlooked source of methane: Study

The water-filled ditches that laced through the oil palm plantation in Sarawak, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo, nagged at Kuno Kasak when he saw them in 2022. He knew that these canals, used to draw water out of spongy peatlands to make them suitable for agriculture, had been shown to be sources […]

Today is #WorldSoilDay so I thought I'd share an animation of Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors. This illustrates how #Sentinel1 #SAR satellite data can be used to delineate #peatland condition.
Turquoise denotes wetter peatland, drier areas are in brown.
Our research found frozen conditions to better differentiate peatland from other land cover & highlight relative condition. Check it out here

Day15 #30daymapchallenge is Fire 🔥
My map is a gif of #Sentinel1 images before & after the #wildfire at Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors, UK in 2018.
The dashed line shows the extent of the fire, which burned on dry #peatland for over 40 days.
The colour range from blue to orange symbolises how radar backscatter represents water bodies/wetter surfaces through to dry, impermeable land cover & demonstrates the positive effects of #peatlandrestoration works since the fire.
All using #qgis
This is what I found when analysing the effect of temperature to delineate #peatland using #Sentinel1.
These images were only 23 days apart in the 2022/23 winter in the West Pennine Moors, but demonstrate differences in backscatter because of temperature. Our research found S1 images in frozen conditions could better delineate peatland & show differences in wetness of this habitat.
