After the #RoyalHorticulturalSociety show in the #MalvernShowground, I got a lecture from The Proper Gardener about some mythical place called Chelsea, where they make tractors, and how a giant wooden woman lying across the lawn was not really everyday horticulture for the masses.

I did manage to mention at the time how Grandma's House managed to be quite realistic, though. (-:

Armed with more subject matter thanks to @ianbetteridge , I shall try to get The Proper Gardener going on the subject of #peat, next.

What is peat?
How does it burn?
Why are we normalising “haze season”?
How do we feel?
Can we express it?

Got some peat for our garden. Buying peat for a garden is very destructive for the environment and peat wetlands are disappearing at a horrific rate. But this was left after someone dredged their fish ponds and dumped it near our village store . At first I thought there was a lot of white plastic in it, but on closer inspection it turned out to be shells of swan mussels, Anodonta cygnea, a sign that the ponds were free of toxic substances.

A couple of examples of my paintings alongside Archie McCall’s pots, exciting to see the visual connection between our work. Though we made the pieces separately, this was the result of almost a year of conversation about our practice and commonalities, and spending time exploring the elements and aesthetics of a local peat bog nature reserve in SW Scotland. The exhibition exnds today, but I will be showing some of this work at Spring Fling Open Studios at the end of May. https://www.spring-fling.co.uk/studio/cat-coulson-2/

Some photographs of a group exhibition I am part of called ‘Conversations with Clay’. Last June I was invited by ceramic artist Archie McCall to work together on a fantastic project culminating in an exhibition at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries. The pieces are the result of almost a year of conversation about our practice and commonalities, and spending time exploring the elements and aesthetics of a local peat bog nature reserve in SW Scotland. It runs until 2nd May 2026. Some great work by the participating artists.

Peatlands are vital for tackling climate change, yet scientists still haven’t found them all | The-14

Peatlands store vast carbon yet remain poorly mapped worldwide. New research highlights urgent gaps in knowledge & their critical role in climate change action.

"By working closely with farmers and graziers we can ensure that they can continue to graze the land. Sustainable grazing benefits the peatland as it helps to keep it healthy by preventing any one species from dominating."

Ryttarens torvströfabrik, the Ryttarens peat litter factory, is preserved as a museum. Peat extraction in Sweden today isn't big business, and my guess is most people don't even know it's happening. These days, it's mainly used in gardening, but also for stuff like insulation, fish tanks and whiskey making. Ryttarens museum is open to the public in summer. You can ride the little sturdy train out on the moss and see how peat was extracted back in the day. Pictured is a detail from an old locomotive.

University of Waterloo: Canadian Peatland Data Portal debuts as a landmark tool for climate research and policy. “Peatlands cover upwards of 12 per cent of Canada’s landscape and store more carbon than all other ecosystems in the country combined… Yet until now, information on these critical ecosystems has been difficult to find. To address this gap, the Can-Peat Network at the University […]
